Not so much into these things, what does Dreamwidth do that LJ doesn't?

Not much, at the moment, but hopefully it will be a stable backup for when Lj has its next inevitable 'wobble', and also, no bloody russian SPAM. It's only intended as an alternative, this comm isn't going anywhere, so it doesn't really matter one way or the other.
