I kid you not. After a little bit of thought (it's been a boring afternoon), I came up with the following list. Anyone care to add to it?
1. She makes for great target practise – as someone else so ingeniously pointed out, Jack was very chivalrous in “Countrycide” and let Gwen get shot first.
2. She’s the quintessential “character we love to hate” – an absolute must-have for every worthwhile TV show.
3. She’s brilliant at being taken hostage – a great thing when one is concerned with keeping one’s boyfriend safe; and seriously, who doesn’t wish she’d gotten blown up in the rift with Captain John?
4. She’s the first one to ask the moronic questions – makes even Janet the Weevil look more intelligent.
5. She’s perfect as bait – weevils, cannibals, psychotic exes: take your pick, people…

But you are so right...Especially with #2!
And one other point you missed...She makes us all feel good about ourselves because we know we will never be like her
