John Barrowman's opinion on how his character Jack sees love.  Extract from Doctor Who Magazine (#398)
A bit of a let down for Janto fans and gwen haters(like me!) I don't really agree with John's view and am a little annoyed, so wanted to share and see other people's views.

“Is there someone out there for Jack? Who’s ‘The One’”? “I’ve never analyzed that,” admits John, “because what helps me play Jack is the fact that he likes everybody, and his love for each person is different. For instance, in my eyes, he does fancy the Doctor, but he would never take that beyond infatuation. As he said to Martha, he would never let the Doctor know. On the other hand, Jack’s love for Ianto is almost...it’s kind of lustful. But I don’t think he’d settle down with Ianto. He might do, but he’d let Ianto know that he [Jack] has to play around on the side. If he’d commit to Gwen, however, he knows that he’d have to commit completely. That’s what makes him fearful of going there. She’d let him flirt, but he could never afford to do anything more with anybody else.

I think he fancies Martha too. He likes her tenacity, her in-your-faceness. He likes her because she’ll spat with him. When he says something flirtatious to her, she’ll turn around and say, “You haven’t got it yet, Jack? You’re still sitting on the fence? You’re waiting for it, huh?” She’ll be snappy with him. There are all these different elements of love...even with Toshiko, although it was more of a fatherly kind of love with Toshiko and Owen, I think. He was guiding them. That’s why it was so devastating for him to lose them. So...to answer your question, I don’t think Jack has “The One”. I don’t think there’s a single person that he’d settle down with. He’s a rogue. Plus, he’s immortal – that’s why he doesn’t commit. He always loses them. He outlives them. They die. He watches them get old. That bothered him in Series One, but now he’s come to terms with that, I think...so he just sleeps around!”

I saw this a few days ago. It made me think that Gareth's the only one that gets his character. John seems to contradict himself sometimes and Eve seems oblivious to all the Gwen-hate. I'm not sure about Burn or Naoko.

This interview totally contradicts another recent interview of his, so I try not to let it bother me.

Eve's whole attitude towards Gwack kind of weirds me out.
Didn't she say not too long ago that the attraction between Jack and Gwen was palpable and that [the writers] were going to make us wait for it? Where as Julie Gardner has said she wants to Janto relationship to continue since it's now such a big part of the show.
I'm quite sure Eve's a sweetheart, but it's kind of like she's living in a bubble with no grasp of the popular pairing(s) and characters in Torchwood.

Yes, Gareth's views kind of make me want to hug him for a good 5 minutes. He understands

'Yes, Gareth's views kind of make me want to hug him for a good 5 minutes. He understands'
It's like I've said before; Gareth really HAS TO understand Ianto because the writers give him so little to work with, and for that he gets nothing but my praise. I can just imagine the absolute mess Jack/Ianto would be if Ianto was played by someone who couldn't act *shudders*

'I'm quite sure Eve's a sweetheart, but it's kind of like she's living in a bubble with no grasp of the popular pairing(s) and characters in Torchwood.'
Eve seems like a lovely women, but she really does seem to be living in a bubble-of-oblivion.

I'm going to be a bit cynic and say that the reason Gareth understands Ianto and his relationship with Jack so well is that he needs to keep his job. He knows that the Jack/Ianto thing is what most fangirls love and what brings him attention, and he milks that for all its worth.

He has to make do with what he is given and make the best of it. And he does that so very well. :)

Yeah. Someone once said on another message board that it might be all part of Gareth's 'lets keep Gareth on Torchwood' agenda. I for one I'm glad that he has worked so hard to keep his job; otherwise we probably would have gotten Jack/Gwen. Nothing turns me off of a show faster than when they put the male and female leads together.

PCZ: I asked John this as well, Jack being from the 51st Century and being immortal and maybe kind of being in a mindset above everything, do you think that the relationship with Ianto keeps him grounded and aware of the little people?

GDL: Absolutely. I think Ianto’s always made him care and that is really the heart of the show. Ianto’s always bearing his emotional side and vulnerable side and keeping his feet on the ground. I think of all the characters, he’s the one who tries to keep everyone else’s feet on the ground. He brings everyone back to reality, often with a dry, witty remark or taking a dig at somebody just to sort of bring people back down.

Yes, as [livejournal.com profile] thi13enthghost said, John contradicts himself left, right and center.
I think the most important thing to keep in mind when reading this, is that the interview was done in March (as I recall), whereas another interview he was apart of during Comic Con (at the end of July) had him saying that he had "fallen for Ianto", etc, etc, etc.

So, I say don't put much stalk in with this one.

This is quite random but...
Can i ask where the original image of your icon came from?
Because, i kind of just died right here.

Oh! Haha, no problem.
It was a photo taken by ewen and donabel at Comic Con 2008. I shamelessly made it into an icon because, like you, I died when I saw it.

John

John is obviously a lovely guy but he has a habit of contradicting himself over a lot of things. Take his age when he left Scotland for example, as he seems to not know if he was 8 or 9, whereas the dates suggest he was 9. Then there is how long he has known Scott. They met in 1993 but John seems to be mostly unaware of this-- I have read a lot of his interviews and he often contradicts himself.

As for this, I think the writers originally intended to get Jack and Gwen together at some point. However, they found this wasn't going to work----although RTD was desperate for it evidently---

As for Eve--well---

Yeah, they did seem to be pushing the whole Jack/Gwen thing.
