I come with this poll because I'm hoping for some help. I'm planing on making a rant  meta on Gwen and why she is such an awful character and would like to know what the general consensus is.

She fails to realise the lives of other characters.

E.g. Tosh. Tosh doesn't have a good record with love. Her first comment about her and Tommy is to ask Jack if he has 'anymore pretty boys in teh freezer'. She may well be joking, but she's not thinking about the other character.

She has a sense of entitlement for no reason, and has no tact about it.

'Even in this second season where she's given the title alien profiler, she's never done any profiling.'
How do you profile an alien anyway??

'She is also designated as second in command despite being the most junior of the team and possessing no quantifiable skill.'
I bet the rest of team just let her *think* she was in charge, that way they could keep her out of the way.

Gwen

She is totally self centered, and as a result, thinks everything and every event revolves around her and her feelings. She is constantly saying things like "I have to do this" and "I need to know this".

She is represented as a superior person to the extent that an entire Police Station listen to her in a crisis. The last time most of them saw her, only a year before, she was a PC walking the beat, as they say. This was so unbelievable that my family thought the program had suddenly become a comedy.

Every man she meets is supposed to be in love with her. She disobeys Jack constantly, cheats on and lies to Rhys and treats PC Andy like dirt. Yet we are supposed to believe they all love her.

RTD and the other writers invent a character with numerous personality flaws who is largely useless at her job, and then expect us to believe she is fantastically wonderful and everyone loves her and she is capable of being second in command of a unit like Torchwood. They really do have a low opinion of TV viewers which I find insulting.

Re: Gwen

Ah, I have heard people say she is a Mary Sue before. Now I realize exactly what it means. Thanks.

Oh dear, I could rant meta on this for pages but, short and sweet -

She has very little life experience yet rants loudly and endlessly;

She has this grand sense of entitlement and yet is a whore hypocrite;

She is supposed to be Jack's 'Rose of Torchwood" yet the only resemblance I've ever seen to Rose is that they are both female. If I were Rose I'd be so insulted I'd stay in the other universe until RTD is run over by a truck leaves.

She refuses to take responsibility for her actions (retconning Rhys) and she didn't seem to care about other people's feelings (Adrift), and my biggest gripe; she was second in command even though she has proven she's inept- maybe the team just let her *think* she was in charge.

Can't wait to see your meta, by the way.

Personally, I find her hugely self-centered and unbelievably hypocritical. For example in Cyberwoman, forget the fact that poor Ianto has just witnessed his girlfriend being murdered by his team, little Miss attention-seeker HAS to know whether or not Jack would have shot HER if she got in the way. I mean, why is that even relevant? selfish much!!

Then, she claims to be the 'heart' of Torchwood, yet she's engaged to one man, cheated on him with another and claims to love a third (do not even get me started on Gwen/Jack). And THEN she confesses to poor old Rhys only to Retcon him all so she can ease her own pitiful conscience!

I generally just despise the whole "I'm the only one that cares" attitude she has.
