My daughter who is 30 doesn't see anything wrong with Gwen. I raised her right so it confuses me. Oh, what a world where being a nasty slut is acceptable.
It's depressing to realise that some people really don't see anything wrong with Gwen's behaviour. Baffling that otherwise perfectly normal, intelligent people might think she's nice. *sigh*
I didn't say she was normal and intelligent. After her husband deserted her and their kids for 2 years with no contact except a lawyer, she saw him at the divorce hearing and let him talk her into reconciling.
It is a puzzlement. I just discovered that there is a serial-killer fanpage thingy on Tumblr. For some recent young mass-murderers. I don't think I phrased that well. LOL Anyway, what is wrong with people. Tumblr is being asked to ban it, but I haven't seen yet today if anything has been done. I ask again, what is wrong with people?
I don't know. It seems people these days have no respect for lifer or for other people. Murderers are treated like celebrities. Even a lot of 'celebrities' are people who have become famous for doing something stupid instead of for being talented. I suppose that's why a lot of people look at Gwen and see nothing wrong about the way she behaves. A lot of real people are as bas as her, or worse, and they are never set straight either.
It is kind of scary, isn't it? We are teaching our children superficiality every moment of the day, it seems. Courage, honor, integrity, these seem to hold very little value, along with a lot of other things I would think are pretty important to pass on to them. It's sad, too.
Could be a generation thing? We would be 1st generation fans who use gwack. The next generation may not. Like the use of Spirk or Spork for Kirk/Spock.
There's a group of three or four teenagers who are just slavishly adoring of each others stories, several of them making Rhys out to be abusive and horrible according to the synopses. I'll admit to checking out the reviews to see what people are saying - because there ARE reviews - but it's mostly them and their cronies telling each other how brilliant they are, how amazing the story is, how adorable Gwen and Jack are together, how super Gwen is, ad nauseum. I console myself by thinking that when they grow up they'll realise what a self-serving bitch Gwen is!
Yeah, it is. He and his cronies who keep telling him what a genius he is instead of telling him he's just not a very good writer and he takes lazy short cuts instead of trying to improve his craft.
The thing about teens is that they're rather fickle. It might be Torchwood and Gwack today, but it'll probably end up being another pairing on another show in a few months. Or, they'll completely forget about all of this when they find a boyfriend (because that's what this is: they reflect themselves onto Gwen and the perfect boyfriend onto Jack).
Anyway, teenage, straight girls, are huge Cooper/Gwack fans because RTD is giving them a character that thinks the way they do and is as immature/naive as they are. I really don't understand and can't think of any explanation for making Rhys out to be abusive...cause he's anything but...I dread to think what they do to poor Ianto (I will not read their stories).
I got curious once and clicked on the reviews for one of their stories. In one review, after praising the story and the pairings, the reviewer continued to say she/he never liked gay couples and was very happy not to see any of *those* in any of the author's stories...
I don't want to make this a pro-gay, anti-gay argument because it isn't, but that one review pissed me off so much I decided to steer clear of anything they post, reviews and all.
I do often wonder if the stories written about Gwen and Jack, or the ones where Jack meets this other woman and immediately falls in love with her, are written by people who are against gay relationships. It's so sad to see that, especially coming from younger generations.
Gwen is so painfully immature, she does come across as a silly, giggly teenager, so I suppose it's no surprise that teenage girls identify with her. Also no big surprise if they use her as a convenient, ready-made self-insert character (she was RTD's after all) because they're either not confident enough in their writing or too lazy to come up with an original character to represent themselves. Then, of course, they have to get the shining hero all to themselves.
I doubt that any of them truly understand Jack's character, like Gwen they just think he's gorgeous and how great would it be to have a boyfriend who will never get any older? Will always look this gorgeous? They don't consider how damaged he is or the fact that beneath the mantle of hero, he's still an ordinary man with the same faults and failings as any other man. They expect him to be perfect, flawless, eternally heroic. The moment Jack does anything she doesn't approve of, shows himself to be an ordinary, fallible human, Gwen gives him hell for it. She has no tolerance for Jack being anything less than perfect.
Gwen is the spoiled child who wants everything her own way because she's been taught to expect it by her doting parents, especially her dad. She thinks all men will just do whatever she wants. I don't know how Rhys puts up with her, he's a saint and definitely not abusive. Gwen is more likely to be the abusive one in that relationship.
Hopefully those girls will get bored and go off to pastures new soon, and let their Harcooper (Gwack) stories die.
Well put. How you translate Rhys being upset by Gwen running off in the middle of their date to Rhys being abusive is beyond me. Unless you really don't understand abuse, in which case you are pretty fortunate so far.
I sometimes wonder what is wrong with RTD if Gwen is what he thinks is an admirable woman.
Yeah, I think they're just too young to understand that Rhys, when he does get angry on the show, always has a legitimate reason to be annoyed, but he never shows any indication that he'll become abusive towards Gwen - though he might have liked to punch Jack a time or two!
I just hope they don't use Gwen as a role model, because if they do then I pity any guy who ever gets involved with any of them and anyone who has to work with them.
There definitely are stories on fanfiction that make up a female character and have Jack and Ianto fight over her or create several female characters so they can each have their own woman. These authors also proclaim--on their profiles or the author's note--to be Christians who think homosexuality is wrong and want to fix the show in their own--in my opinion--misguided ways. So, there definitely are some anti-gay fics out there which once I find out, I stay completely away from that author.
The question I have for them is why they watch Torchwood if gay relationships bother them so much? I mean, they're welcome to write whatever they want, however, claiming their purpose on their profiles or in their notes pisses me off.
From experience, I think people who make up female characters for Jack and Ianto tend to be more homophobic than any Gwack fans, who usually just like that pairing (though turning everyone heterosexual like these girls do sends a bit of a strange message...).I don't think I've ever heard a Gwacker-author openly rant against gays, though--however, the same can't be said about their fans.
Anyway, the world just depresses me sometimes... sorry for the rant and going off topic.
Rant away, I agree with you. I won't tolerate homophobia, or any discrimination against anyone based on their sexuality. One of the things I liked about Torchwood was the way Jack and Ianto's relationship was just accepted, there wasn't a big deal made out of it, they were simply together. That's partly why killing Ianto off struck such a sour note, because the het couple (Gwen and Rhys) got to keep everything while the same sex couple were destroyed. Everything bad that happened to them made it look like they were being persecuted.
It always seems to be the same (or very similar) with the made-up female characters. They're often teenagers, Jack immediately falls for them, and of course he's never felt this way about anyone before. Ianto is dumped, Jack marries new girl and they immediately start a family, and everyone is so happy for them, because the new girl is wonderful and super special and everyone adores her... It's disgusting.
With the Gwackers it's just as bad though, because I guess Gwen gets free of Rhys (he dies or dumps her) and then Jack professes undying love and Ianto is forgotten.... I don't know, I don't read Gwack. Long ago, when I was new to the fandom, I was reading a fic where Ianto suddenly told Jack that he should stop Gwen and Rhys' wedding and be with the woman he loves... I stopped reading at that point.
I have rules about what I will and won't read. No RPF, no Gwack, no Ianto dies permanently/Jack is grieving. I want happy, happy, happy. With a bit of angst. I'd prefer no Gwen, but it's really hard to find a story where the author just leaves her out completely.
I think the thing with teenage girls, is that we can hope they grow up and see love and relationships in a more mature way. Also hoping, of course, that they drop their homophobia along the way.
I am Christian, and I love the Janto relationship! For me, two persons (2 men, 2 woman, 1 woman & 1 man...) that love each other and want to be together is the best of the world. No problem with Science either. So Janto forever! They´re the best couple of the show and my reason to see it. Love them!
Well, I think that goes along with what I have read that Christ taught, but it certainly does not conform to today's 'faux' Christianity, which does seem to be mainly used to justify hate and prejudice. Just an observation, not meant to start a thing about religions on here.
I know, don´t worry. I met people who uses the religión to manipulate and make unhappy to other people. And of course I don´t understand discrimination, hate and prejudice at all. So I understand what you mean. Don´t worry
In one of those "stories" i´ve writte a comment sayng the obvious: Janto is the perfect couple *and it´s canon*, Jack and Ianto love each other, etc, but it´s curious, that comment isn´t there. So i´m sure there are people writing similar things, but they only choose those that say the "marvelous" couple ¡?!? is Jack and bitch G***.
Yes, I think it's safe to say that the Gwack lovers would delete any comment that didn't agree with them, and they continue to gush over each other's stories as if they'd invented fanfiction. *shrugs* They're only crawling out of the woodwork these days because there are fewer Torchwood fics being written. *rolls eyes*
They can paint it any colour they want, they can add spots or stripes, bring in some really good lighting, or a nice touch of wallpaper - but we will still recognise it as crap and mock it accordingly.
Why don't they just stop trying so hard? Harcooper or Gwack, I find both terms, along with the mention of any associated fiction, totally unappealing & nausea-inducing. Now, I have advance warning to stay away from anything listed as Harcooper. Thanks guys!
Sounds like some people really need to re-watch Torchwood with open minds, and admit just how devious, hypocritical and Manipulative the Teflon Tart actually is
Reminds me of the early Trek days and the much-mocked Mary Sue stories. these were unbelievably dreadful as she captivated the entire crew, saved the ship, saw Spock through pon farr all before breakfast. Maybe we should call her Gwennie Sue - or Gwennie Poo. One notorious MS Diamonds and rust - known as rhinestones and mush contained the line that forever condemned it. "He - Kirk - had tried to like Spock." Nuff said.
Hah, I bet Gwennie Poo would be very happy to help the whole of Vulcan with their pon farr. All the while making cow eyes at Jack and declaring her undying love for Rhys every five minutes.
Star Trek, well the new movies, reminded me why Gwen is just a bad character, period. Because even though I ship Spock/Kirk, I actually like Uhura a lot. She might Spocks girlfriend in the last two films, and yeah, that's a bit of a problem for my shipper heart, but she is also a lovely character and nothing like Gwen. And while I love a good Gwen bashing fic, I'm actually very picky when it comes to new!ST fics in which Spock has to break up with her to be with Jim. I don't like to see Uhura written out of character, while Gwen, well, Gwen is usually IN character even if she is the biggest b!tch on the planet. See, Rusty, I'm not a failure of the female kind that can simply not understand St.Gwen, your character just sucks.
Same here. Actually for a second I wondered if I should pop over and complain in a few reviews, that I expected Gwen/Owen from the Harcooper. I bet they haven't thought about this at all.

I saw 'Harcooper' pop up, and assumed it referred to Owen Harper-Gwen Cooper.
Sounds just as bad as Gwack. I know I'm biased, but even so...
