It's been a long time since I was on here, and even longer since I updated the fic index. I will get on that as soon as I can but before I've been thinking, Torchwood as a concept, had such promise, Doctor Who it's big brother has remained a constant and even taking in account the changing face of both the Doctor and his companion the dynamic remained basically the same. Torchwood on the other hand which I assume in the beginning was a catalyst for the 'fan favourite' Captain Jack to have his own show, became the Gwen Cooper show and because of that Torchwood didn't stand a chance. The black widow not only causes the death of so many people around her but also apparently the show that spawned her...

I haven't even watched MD I must admit but my hatred of Gwen Cooper is strong (so strong that it overcome my love of Giles *those who get that 5 points*)

She did, damn her. RTDs obsession with his 'perfect woman' skewed everything in her favour to the detriment of every other character on the show, including the star. Torchwood's concept was such that there would never have been any limit to the different scenarios writers could come up with - as evidenced in the wealth of fanfic available. Literally anything could come through the Rift from the past, present or future, and from earth, other planets, other galaxies, even other dimensions. They could battle an invasion one week, help a stranded traveller the next, deal with a crashed spaceship full of refugees, puzzle over something that turned out to be a weapon, a medical device, a kitchen implement or a toy... The possibilities were endless, but the whole premise was hamstrung by the way evetything ended up being about Gwen Bloody Cooper, the single most irritating and incompetent character ever created, and her boring life, interspresed with brief flashes of Torchwood in action.

We were robbed! In other hands, and without Gwen, the show cvould have been as big as Doctor Who.

The moment Gwen Cooper showed up on screen the show was doomed and didn't even know it. I remember being so excited about Torchwood but not liking Gwen almost immediately, she took up too much screen time from the other, more interesting, characters....especially Jack. Jack was the reason I watched, not Gwen, and I kept hoping she'd be tuned down a bit later but that never happened.

*sigh*

Torchwood could still be on today if not for Gwen bloody Cooper.

Bitter disappointment that will stay in my mind for a very long time. The show had SUCH promise... only to be wasted on an insulting, weak, Mary-Sue character. I still mourn all the things it *could* have been...

* that's Eve Myles' new show right? the May/December relationship one....I'd have to look it up :(

still shocked that someone like Gwen survived Torchwood when more experience people didn't.
As soon as she lied to Rhys that 1st time when she didn't have any reason to, she lost my attention.

That was the big problem they focused so much on Gwen that they wasted and ruined what could have been an amazing show. There is still so much we could have learned about the other characters, the more interesting characters. We knew practically nothing about the others until Fragments, I would have loved to see episodes dealing with Suzie, had she always been heading down the dark path or was it the glove? I wanted to know more about Ianto, how did he fit back into the team after Lisa, there was so much damage done on both sides, I wanted to see the Jack/Ianto relationship develop, them to go on dates, not the Rhys/Gwen moments were got instead.

RTD was so in love with Gwen's character that he couldn't see any of the others characters but her and in the end that ended up hurting what could have been a amazing show. Oh well at least there is fanfiction that we can turn to.

Everyone has put it well & I too have never seen MD or the thing with Giles My sheer dislike of Gwen has destroyed any potential to tolerate the actress, as Gwen is what I see

Actually Torchwood wasn't supposed to be Torchwood, it was an original screenplay by RTD and Jack was originally not in it. When RTD couldn't sell it to the network he rewrote it as a Doctor Who spinoff with Jack.

The sad thing is, Gwen had such potential. She could have been a strong character, through whose eyes the audience learned about TORCHWOOD AS SHE DID. Unfortunately RTD's obsession with the actress reduced the character to a sheer annoyance. From her very first appearance she was responsible for the deaths of innocents due to her incompetence and inability to do as she was told. She also hurt and damaged all others, from Rhys to the rest of the team, and others It's significant that Gwen is so disliked and despised; I can't think of any other character who has caused a site like this. If a fan writer had created her they'd have been laughed to scorn.

Let me add: 10 Reasons I love Gwen Cooper

She takes responsibility for her mistakes, and learns from them.
She's driven by curiosity and compassion.
She's honest, and says what she thinks.
She loves Jack, but doesn't mind opposing him when it seems appropriate.
She loves two men, and is handling it to the best of her abilities.
She likes sex. A lot.
She's a good friend to Ianto, especially in series 2.
She's cute in uniform.
She is willing to be convinced she's wrong.
She risks her life to save others, without hesitation.

It´s impossible for me connect with her. I can´t with her. I just think she wasn´t an appropriate leading role and I think she wasn´t well written. I LOVE JANTO. Jack IS the leading character of the show (something that some writers forgot) and Ianto is ADORABLE. And the perfect companion for Jack forever.
And Tosh and Owen, the perfect team. Clever, intelligent and braves.
