I've never seen an episode of Miracle Day, never seen a clip, only heard what other people had to say about it.  Maybe I saw a few photos around.  I don't watch BBCA.  So I'm minding my own business in the break room at work and look up at the TV on the wall and what do I see?  An ad for MD!   (Can't hear the sound with all the people talking so I was totally blindsided).  Unfortunately it was like a train wreck -- I tried to look away... but I looked up again just in time to see Superhero Gwen with her rocket lancher or whatever it was.  That was when I fled to the bathroom to escape.  I'm traumatized.  I can't believe Gwen invaded my workplace.  No one even watches BBC where I work!  I have lost my innocence and will never get it back.  I need sympathy!

On a related note, does anyone have a character they hate more than Gwen?  Because I gotta say, after many decades of TV watching, I truly hate Gwen Cooper more than any other character I've ever seen.  In fact, I rarely totally hate them.  I hardly spend any time on LJ these days, so I just have the basic free account now with only 6 user icons.  I hate Gwen so much I had to keep one anti-Gwen to use.  What a remarkable woman!

I have over 45 years of watching TV with a fannish eye and I cannot recall another character that I've hated so much that it leaves a sour taste in my mouth. There have been characters that have really annoyed me, and characters I could live without, but Gwen is truly in a class of her own, so yeah, thanks for that, RTD.

*Offers Ianto's coffee to help you get over the trauma*

Gwen has a bad habit of sneaking up on the unprepared. I opened our TV magazine a couple of months ago to find her staring at me *shudders*

Nope, never come across any TV character that irritates me more than Gwen. She's in a class of her own - and I wish she'd just stay there instead of sneaking out to traumatise good people.

I wonder if it's possible to suffer from terminal Gwen...

I really don't think I hate any character more than I hate Gwen. With the possible exception of those bloody beans... spoiling our Janto >:-(

Here, have some nekkid Jack. Hopefully it'll help :)

I have to agree with the Gwen hate. She was forced down our throats as 'our' point-of-view character, told how wonderful she is, all the while watching her lie, cheat, manipulate, try to destroy Ianto and Jack's relationship, such as it was, and behave abominably to a man she kept insisting she was madly in love with(Rhys, in case you live under a rock), and in general not be anyone I would ever want to be identified with. I cringe just hearing her name. I do like Eve Myles, however. Sometimes it's hard to remember than an actor is NOT their character, and vice versa.

TBH I never even noticed her, at all, for the whole first series. There was a big full page spread in a newspaper about TW and showing a heavily photo shopped pictured of Eve in a basque and saying she was the star of the show. I had to go and look at the credits to find out who she was......RTD had almost nothing to do with the first two series (the only series as far as I am concerned) that is why they were good. Then he lost DW and so turned his attention to the SJ Adventures *which I stopped watching as he really fouled the storylines up) and TW ...well we all know what happened there don't we. The man is desperate, nothing he is doing seems to be a success- I wonder why? As a matter of fact, Rose in the later series of Ten DW I find every bit as irritating as you were unable to ignore her- but then I never liked BP at all, from almost day one, and like Eve, she made the mistake of believing all the rubbish RTD told her. Just for the record (I know we are not supposed to say this so I shall keep it very mild if that's OK) I do not like EM, and I do not like BP, never have, never will. It would be interesting to see who dislikes the actors as well as the characters, for whatever reason, but perhaps here is not the place to do this.

From: [identity profile] excentric397.livejournal.com

Look at how Gwen treated Rhys, and then at how Rose treated Mickey, almost as if they were only on earth for these women's convenience, and ask yourself what must be wrong with RTD if he sets this type of person up to be the one we are meant to share point-of-view with and are supposed to love and admire. These are the kind of women HE loves and admires??? The man has some serious issues, I think. Did not watch Mayo Day, as I've seen it called, and will not ever watch anything put out by that TRD ever again. I think he's a jerk, and I will never forgive him for disrespecting GDL in public. (I wasn't there, I read about it)

Rose-bloody-Tyler. Who is basically Gwen, only with a bad bleach job and the excuse of being young and uneducated.

From: [identity profile] slns7552.livejournal.com

Totally agree about Rose. I didn't even hate JR as much as I despise Gwen and Rose.

History is full of good "bad" characters. John Harrison from Star Trek into Darkness, the most recent one I can think of. Moriarty from Sherlock. Or if you think Doctor Who The Master.Meg, Azazel and Crowley from Supernatural. Each of them evil and each of them loved and adored by fans. Because nobody went and tried to force us into thinking that they're the reborn Mother Mary while we watched them cheat and lie and hurt and kill. Oh you'll hate them but you'll also love them for being bloody brilliant and you can't wait for them to show up again.
Gwen? She is that annoying bitch at school or work who always gets her way because she is either cheating or the teachers/bosses pet. The world already has way too much useless creatures like that, why should I like her? Esp. when I see Tosh next to her, who would have deserved all Gwen had (a good life, bf/husband, baby..) MUCH more then somebody who would have f**ked her boss on her very own wedding day without thinking twice.

From: [identity profile] ruby-took.livejournal.com

I think that's exactly it. If you hate a character you're supposed to hate - i.e. the villain - then that's good writing. Having a character you love to hate can add a lot to the enjoyment factor, and if they're brilliant enough to be admired despite the evilness, well that just gives them a very welcome extra dimension. It's when you hate a character you're supposed to like and/or identify with that the problems start.

There is one character on my list (a long list) that comes close to beating Gwen.. DR. Greg Pratt from ER.

From: [identity profile] debster62.livejournal.com

Oh the horror

Strangely enough, the other character I hate with a passion is another RTD creation - Michael 'Mikey' Novotney from Queer as Folk US. I absolutely abhor the character & have suppressed all memory of the 5th season. I don't think RTD can help himself, he creates characters that polarise the fans. I never watched Miracle Day & never will.

Love Donna and Tosh strong women who Saint Gwen was never worthy of carrying their shoeboxes. RTD gave us childlike women such as Gwen and Rose yet we are the ones called the mysognists.

From: [identity profile] kassy2.livejournal.com

RTD is not a misogynist he's and idiot- there is quite a lot of difference....

From: [identity profile] kamiandcat.livejournal.com

Nope, Gwen wins by miles when it comes to my favorite to hate character.
I didn't like Martha much, and I didn't like Carole Marcus in Star Trek Into Darkness (mostly because I found her acting weird), but they are all not in the same league as Gwen. Martha I could ignore and if Marcus is in the next movie I hope she'll do better and it will be okay, but Gwen? I'm only interested in seeing her again if she means a painful and bloody end within the next 10 seconds.

From: [identity profile] rocky-oberlin.livejournal.com

I had to watch the stupid thing from the start to the end. I wanted end it after a couple of the disks (I'm SO glad we didn't buy it! We just wasted our time on Netflix). Rocket launcher Gwen goes down from there, so be glad that you only saw that part.

As for a character that I don't like as much as I don't like Gwen? Um Ziva David from NCIS. She goes around with "Mossad this and Mossad that" and she's not in Mossad any more. I have no idea why the main character, Gibbs, trusted her when he was suspicious of her when they first met. Then she becomes a trusted colleague that he works with (almost over his second in command who was with him for more than the three seasons when she first appears. She's now gone, but my family says that the second in command of the group, Tony, was in love with her since the beginning. Frankly I can't see it and I can see her treating him like crap. So Ziva is right up there with Gwen. I probably could think of more, but I'm not going to delve into my memory of (old) programs to see who I disliked as much as the Torchwood Miracle Whip.

From: [identity profile] shadowb3e.livejournal.com

For me the next character I can't stand the most would be Kate from the first two seasons of NCIS. She could almost be Gwens sister with the way she bullied Tony, and her self-righteous, arrogant attitude. I was so happy to see her go.

Also really can't stand Catherine from the new Hawaii Five-0. Everytime she shows up on screen, or in a promo all I can think is 'great, another episode with her, lovely'. And I can't help but wonder what her purpose is.

That sounds horrible, nothing worse than Gwen appearing when you don't expect it, like the Spanish Inquisition, only not as nice.

Only character I can think of that I dislike almost as much as I dislike Gwen is Jack O'Neill, from Stargate SG-1. I could have liked the series if he'd not been there, but he was overly aggressive, irritating and had a strong sense that he was the centre of the universe. I know he was supposed to be a strong leader, but there's strong leaders and there's *him*. I was cheering on the Goa'uld to nuke the b****r and if that's the reaction of some viewers, something's gone *very* wrong.

From: [identity profile] balance2012.livejournal.com

Worse than Gwen? It's a tough decision to say which character I've watch would be worse than Gwen. I would say that Rose Tyler, Justin Taylor(QAF) and Gwen Cooper are the same level to me. They are all arrogant and doing what they want but don't think their behavior would hurt their family or not. They are all female/male leads which mean we are suppose to love them, but over half of time I just want to give them a slap.

Its not tv, and its not a "Good Character," but no character will ever be hated more by me than Umbridge. That said, Gwen's the winner in the "Good Characters" category.

I know this is not about bashing actors, but i have to say Eve Myles is not a fabulous actress for me. I thinks a better actor would become Gwen likable (even with a bad writer like RTD), and she couldn´t do that. In TW i love all the actors except her. And Gareth, with much less scenes, becomed the heart of the show. One actor has to be very good for that. Sorry, RTD , but Eve IS NOT the best actress of UK (I prefer to see that quote as a very bad joke). And I have not interest in her career especially.
