If they felt so insecure that they needed to try and counter us, then I feel kind of sorry for them. Apparently they secretly feel Gwen isn't quite as well loved as they publicly claim her to be...?
That's okay. They're entitled to their space on the internet, just like us. Maybe none of us can understand why they like her, but I guess that they can't understand why we don't like her.
I also despise Ten but don't have a problem with others liking him because I think he's got redeeming qualitites and circumstances, even though for me personally, those are way outwiehgted by the bad. Gwen, on the other hand... As I'm yet to discover any valid attractive traits or mitigating factors about her at all, I consider liking Gwen outrageously poor judgement. And my Ravenclaw sensibilities revolt at that. =)
Blegh, Ten. Thank god he finally regenerated his ass outta there.
And you're right, people keep TELLING us Gwen has redeeming qualities, but she's never shown them on the screen.
On the other points, I think it kinda childish to put up a community, not because you have feelings about that character but because you dislike the idea of another community existing. Even more childish to the go and try to spread hate on a character you do like because what? The world needs to be black and white and sum of everything has to be zero?
No problem with Ten, it was the show runner I had the problem with and the interminable, endless, mind bogglingly boring spiel with "Rose"...by the end no-one actually cared but what the heck RTD was on a roll and no-one seemed to have the wit to stop him! I actually did not watch the last two episodes- which is the first time in the history of DW that I have ever missed a programme, form the first ever broadcast to today. Nice one RTD!!
Only got a problem with 10 in the end when he was all emo. On top of that came his "good bye tour" where everyone got something special, but all he had for Jack was a one night stand with some guy that looked like Ianto 2.0, yeah that's exactly how you treat a guy who died for you over and over again for a whole year. Man, was I glad that RTD left Doctor Who after that, he would have ruined the show for me, too.
The difference is that 10 only became annoying and "wrong" Gwen has always been annoying and well a bitch.
Maybe I'm a glutton for punishment, but I checked out their forum. Like I said, they are welcome to their space on the net, just like us. What amused me, though, were a few things.
1. Why the need to justify their existence by citing themselves as a contrary preference to us? One commentor to the original mod post said we'd had a 'stronghold' for far too long. A stronghold? Really? Does that mean they're scared that we hold the majority opinion on Gwen? Hmmm....
2. One comment stated that they believe we expected them to fail. That was posted in August of last year. I don't know about anyone else, but from August last year, until now, I had no idea that community even existed. Methinks they have an inflated idea of how much we really give a damn about the pro-Gwen support out there. They're entitled to their opinions, and though we may not understand why they like the character, I don't think there is anyone here who wouldn't support their right to have and express those opinions.
3. More than one commentor expressed relief at the genesis of the community, because there were no other pro-Gwen forums out there. Really? They've never heard of the House of Cooper? Perhaps they should refrain from disrespecting other comms when they aren't even aware of the comms that exist on their own side of the fence...?
Just a few thoughts. I am now off to let the plot bunnies hop - I feel the urge to write some Gwen-bash fic.
Please do. I've just started posting "Everything Changes" to FF.Net - I'm curious what I'd be lynched first: for the not-Gwen-friendly moments or for the modified scenes from KKBB.
Oh, must check it out. I love posting retaliatory comments (non-abusive, I promise) when someone bags a fanfic writer just because they don't like that Super Trooper Bazooka Cooper hasn't been treated with the respect *gag* that she deserves.
And I have a few plot bunnies hopping. I just need one of them to really fire. Soon, I hope, when RL gives me a break.
I write in at least a dozen different fandoms (if you count crossovers), and as I like to write AUs that are very close to canon and yet very different in some aspects, I get that a lot. Once I was even accused of plagiarism, although I always very clearly state in the AN that some lines of dialogue are from the actual episode. *shrugs* I guess some people just can't bear different POVs and they graps at every straw desperately to put an author down.
So far, no reviews at all. One guy even put the story on his favourites list and someone on story alert. Better than flames on any day, so I'm not complaining.
Looking forward eagerly to your plotbunnies. RL has the annoying habit to interfere with fannish activities, I know.
That makes me feel like some kind of knight protecting a castle.
Thanks for the compliment Pro-gwennies!
I think they meant that we, as the AGA have a well-known, very stable community. You know, we want to vent, we go here and we just keep going. There's a strict policy for everyone to be able to speak, there's hardly any fighting within the community and we've got regular updates going. Even now, in the big black hole of uncertainty, there are still plenty of fics appearing.
Honestly, this community is almost 5 years old (shouldn't we start celebrating?) and so far, none of their attempts to break us off have worked. We're sitting here on our own little hill while plenty of other comms just cease to exist.
Every so often you hear fans going "Oh, look at those crazies from the AGA." but then there's also stuff like "Viewer ratings of MD? yeah, they've got those at the AGA." (seriously, someone at IMDB said that). The fandom knows us and I think that's what bothers them. We're out there and they don't want us to be.
This is our little stronghold and they can throw rotten tomatoes at it all they like, it ain't going anywhere.
It never fails to amuse me when I stumble across negativity directed towards us, apparently for having the audacity to express our opinion in a public forum. And that they feel obliged to set something up to counter us? Please...
You're right - the fandom does knows us, and it really seems to eat away at those who like Gwen. Ironically, when they try to 'shout' us down and tell us to keep our opinions to ourselves, they are then the bullies that they try to make us out as being.
Oh, I nearly choked, too, at one comment, saying that we were all bullied at school, and this is just our pathetic attempt to get some payback for it. If we were the ones who were bullied, does that make the ones over at the Pro-Gwen Alliance the ones who did the bullying? Not exactly a stellar argument there...
Now, I'm not afraid to admit that I was bullied as a kid. To the point of depression and a few suicidal tendencies to boot. (It's been a long time ago, and I got over it) But to bring someone's personal life into an argument about a TV-Show does seem like an awfully defensive move...
And that's the thing isn't it?
To us, by now, it's all sticks and stones. We're the village idiots of the Torchwood fandom and I'm pretty sure that we've had every variation of insults slung our way (Even the SHOWRUNNER joined in). It just stopped mattering a loooong time ago. The people setting up shit to counter us? RTD yelling that we're being pathetic? They're the ones who feel threatened enough to spread their hate, we just don't like bad writing and stay in our own stronghold.
There's plenty of us and we've got a thick skin. Deal with it.
We're not bullies, bullies invade other people's space, they're out to publicly humiliate others. Bullies need a target and an audience. The AGA wants equals to talk to.
Now, I don't know about all of our members, but I believe most either have good etiquette in public spaces or stay away from the places they can't stand. In addition to that I remember the Christmas invasion (two years ago?) when there were a couple of Gwennies who followed a frustrated member to our community. They were not banned, they were not insulted, there were even apologies from both sides at the end of it.
Scarily mature for a couple of vengeful nerds, eh?
Besides, if we really were processing our hate for bullies and our target was Gwen...wouldn't that make Gwen the prime example of a bully? Since all of us chose her as the avatar of our childhood menaces.
Why would being a bully victim make us somehow less than the general population? If I had to give it a go, I'd say that bullies were the bad guys...not their victims.
@dr doomsduck I always say that the two places where I can still go and give my piece of mind about Torchwood without having to fear to get ripped a new one by some person who has clearly never ever heard that another POV then her/his own is allowed are the AGA and Save Coffee Boy. I really think the anti-Gwenners and the Hysterical Women are the most sane people in our fandom.
hello, never commented here before but have read some of the stories from people here and this site was mention, so i was just looking and thought this sounded strange wouldn't have Gwen had her own fan sites before now and checked out the profiles and it turns out not to be just a Gwen thing, it's everyone from the original cast with their own pro- whomever site and most seem to be the same with about same amount of people except Ianto who's site has double LOL, just thought you might be interested it certainly made me laugh

I think that says it all really.

I'm just darkly amused by their desperate attempts to fight other people's dislike towards the Teflon Tart, that's all.

My favorite of the new Doctors remains 9 though.
