Would you please lj-cut? Aside from the length, sheer Gwen-ness alone needs to be warned for! =) Thanks for that 'sultry Ianto'. Not bad at all, mmm. (Though not my idea of a sex symbol, either.)

Anyway, have just been showing some TW to a friend recently - mostly some funny scenes - and accidentally hit upon Gwen (wasn't fast enough to skip her forward as I normally do). My friend seemed so negatively impressed with her just from a mere glimpse that they wouldn't stop wondering aloud on how can that possibly be a lead character. Huh, I thought, some first impressions hold very true, apparently.

Oh WOW to Karen Gillan, that one is a no brainer. Me, I'll watch anything with Alex Kingston in it, but I know some do not care for her. You had to have seen Naoko in AbFab over Christmas to have believed it, she has put on a bit of weight, but I think that was probably a reaction to having to slim down to a skeleton for the John Lennon thing with CE.
I think the Beeb nominated and short listed both her and JB- JB will get a few (probably quite a few) fangirl votes. Can't see that happening with EM though. You need to go vote, btw, the way to make sure they get nowhere is to vote for other people.

The Beeb don't shortlist for the NTA. There was a VERY long list of nominations put forward by the people who run the awards, ITV I think, last September. The public then voted to narrow it down to a shortlist. Barrowman, for example was nominated in several categories on the long list but only made the shortlist in one category. I think TW was nominated in the long list but didn't make the shortlist.

No doubt a good part of the reason they killed Tosh off. She was superior in looks (and compassion and brains) to Precious Perfect Gwen so they had to do something to try to get us to see Gwen as a *gags* sex symbol.

I see it! She's the only one who is approachable by us mere mortals, and the the fact that she is willing to do anything! I mean she was shagging Owen while she had a fiance, she was more than willing to shag Cerys(?) even though she'll blame the sex gas, we don't know how she was off screen but we all have our opinions, and she would have dropped poor Rhys at the alter if Jack had asked her to. Of course all the guys see her as a sex symbol, she is definitely a blow up doll.

I really don't see what everyone else sees in this woman, she would be better on earth in about 5 billion years, when they're about to blow it up.

I think Gwen is like those optical illusions, you know the ones that you stare at until your eyes blur and you start seeing things that aren't actually there.

Hence instead of seeing Gwen, most people see someone like Jessica Alba or whoever your fantasy of the moment is.

Subtle but effective camouflauge me thinks

Well I DO like it when actors look a bit more human then model. Like Burn who's a bit short, like Gareth who seems to gain weight as fast as I do. I think what makes me see Gwen as ugly is that she's not the most beautiful women around combined with the fact that she's black and rotten on the inside. Then they go and want to tell me that every gu has the urgent need to shag her, Rhys, Owen, Jack, Andy, Eugene Jones, even that creepy alien in the Mariana Trench (why couldn't they just leave her there again?), the only men around who seems to be able to think with more then his basement brain when she's around it Ianto. And given her looks that just as unlikely as the fact that a clueless copper can't turn into the second in command of Torchwood within months. (BTW, most of you probably know, in the novel Consequences it's revealed that Tosh was the one who did that job during TYTNW, because the TW handbook says it's the longest serving member that will get the job. Meaning the row would have been Tosh, Owen, Ianto and then Gwennie Poo.)

Oh, yeah- back to Gwen! EM is a very strange actress. When I first saw TW I thought she might be quite attractive, and then the eye-bulge school of acting took over and the character proved to be so annoying/irritating/unlikeable, that I really couldn't see any further than that. With a bit of time between series, though I think I was being a bit more objective BUT I still think that she's not attractive- and the screechy, eye-bulge acting makes her even worse.
Right, back to the photo of GDL... Mmm...
