Pre-police Gwen

I have been thinking (yes, it's a rare occasion, but it does happen). We know that Gwen hasn't been with the police for long, canonically. Not that I'd personally buy it, in my little corner of Denial Land she'd been there for years and ruined the careers of three or four different partners before Andy.

But let's say I wold buy it. However, she's also supposed to be around thirty or so. So, what the heck did she do before bullying/lying/sleeping herself through police school? Considering that her parents seemed well off in the only episode they appeared, do you think she worked at all? And if she did, where?

Let's come up with those ideas... *g*

Well, let's look at that, shall we? Gwen never makes an impression of being well-traveled, so it's not likely that she went on a trip around the world. She met Rhys in college, so we know that she at least set foot on college grounds, whether she actually did something there, well, that remains to be seen.

Her education for the force was two years as probation constable (courtesy of wiki), which was spent half in the field and half being trained academically. We can't be sure that she finished those years, because RTD said that she was with the force for 6 months only, which could mean that she was a completely educated constable for 6 months, or that she was on a quarter of her education.

Personally, I think she just partied and skipped from job to job. The police being one in a long line of short fancies she just woke up with one day. Torchwood being the next. The fact that the organisation changed her job drastically every few months and threathened to retcon when she quit made her stick with it.

You would think from the episode "Random Shoes" that she's had some medical training prior to working with the police, but that doesn't make ANY SENSE AT ALL.

I'd bet she didnt even open him up. I dont recall if she did but since the cause of death was already known (hit and run) the only reason to do an autopsy would be to determine if drugs and/or alcohol were involved and what he might have injested just prior to death...which would have led to the full examination of the stomach and contents and the discovery of the Dogon eye...hense it is my bet Gwen would have just ticked the box of cause of death to be that of blunt force trauma due to car hitting him

Hmmm... what he says does have a point. Although I always imagined her working in a shop that sells overprized clothes. And that she got fired because her untidy appearence led to great disapporval by the rich customers. Plus, she was also rude to them.

I reckon mummy and daddy made her get a job so that she could 'learn to get along with people better', and she was the bitch that every shop/office has who runs around brown nosing the boss, and doing everything she can to big up her image by making everyone else look bad and getting them in trouble at every opportunity.

I suspect a little bit of college nothing to stressful, a few nice jobs eg nursey helper (explains the need to create wall art!), shop assistant somewhere non chain (explains attitude to Tosh's clothes), bit of bar work and then the realisation that time is moving on and she better get a job with reasonable prospects,,,so lets join the police ands ther rest ids the stuff of history as they say

Yes, in the end I went for the shop girl option, too - assuming that was where she met her two airheaded friends that we never saw except in the wedding episode.

I'm still trying to work out how 'Daddy's Little Princess' got a job in the police force, it doesn't seem to match the class status her family aspires to.

That baffled me, too - especially that her parents would let her become a common cop. But again, when was she ever denied when she wanted something? Or someone?

She's probably one of those 'free-spirited' and 'impulsive' people -- you know, the type who just CANNOT be bothered with regulations and schedules and responsibilities and all. That's why she wants to be in Torchwood, because she seems to have carte blanche to do just whatever she pleases.

I guess she tried this and that in college but was never happy because hey, if you're a student or trainee you have to LEARN stuff from OTHER people, but we all know that Gwen ALWAYS knows best and better, right? Of course failing in every single lesson she ever took was also NEVER her fault, because it's a rule of nature it is NEVER Gwennie-Poos fault, and her father payed for another year/subject. I guess in the end she realized that she was too stupid to become a lawyer, doctor, pilot or teacher and maybe tried working as a nurse (which resulted in the numbers of deaths at St.Helens going through the roof) then joined the RAF (in case you wonder why people got caught in friendly fire in the middle east all the time--- it was NOT Gwennie Poos fault, how was she supposed to know that there are rebels AND British troops out there??? No one can really blame her for that, right? In the end she settled for the only other job left that would have made her "admired for what she does" person, the police. Of course she together more about becoming head chief then ending up with the beat when she signed up but as you know... it was not her fault... it was that Swanson bitch who took the job away from her only because she was better. Live is SO unfair!
