I was just at
house_of_cooper (morbid curiosity) and it now has 160 members. Does anyone here know *anyone* who likes Gwen? I'd love to know what the appeal is (more morbid curiosity). I can understand what the appeal of Ianto is,
torchwoodcoffee has 1300+ memebers, but Gwen 'Little Miss Sensitive' Cooper??

that's my point exactly - I've yet to come across a rabid Gwen fan willing and able to argue logically with support of scenes/dialogue from the show

At least when I bash Gwen I actually cite examples from the show.

It wouldn't surprise me. They two Jack/Gwen fics I read at

...And then on the author on her profile points out that she's a Christian and watches an edited version of torchwood cos she hates violence and homosexuality. (that whole confession by the author makes me laugh and cry and the same time!)
That is where my idea of gwack shippers being homophobes... they go for the 'Straight' pairing (where’s the fun in that?).

'..And then on the author on her profile points out that she's a Christian and watches an edited version of torchwood cos she hates violence and homosexuality.' I heard about that too. She only sees what, ten minutes of each episode. Why doesn't she just watch Dr Who?

'Or gwackers actually fantasize about themselves in romantic relationship with Jack and can only visualize it if Jack is partnered with a female.' I never thought about like that, but it does make sense. I suppose it's like women who read romance novels(which have never appealed to me either).
'A little icky in my book.' That is kind of icky, isn't it.

As for my shipping preferences, my preference is Jack/Ianto. I also have this weird fascination w/Gwen and Ianto, but FIC ONLY. I'd not like to see it onscreen. I like Gwen and Rhys too and wouldn't want them to change that on the show itself. I have other ships too, but those are the ones that deal w/Gwen.

'I also have this weird fascination w/Gwen and Ianto, but FIC ONLY.' I had no idea there was Gwen/Ianto fic(I don't read much fic, in the first place). What is the main appeal of Gwen/Ianto?
How do you feel about Gwen and PC Andy relationship? (either on-screen or in fic).
What are your feelings on Gwen's character development this series?

I've only seen a few, actually. Most of them are set during the year that never was, or the year that was after the year that never was (it never has been made v. clear to us exactly when Jack returned after TLOTTL, so I'm grasping).
As for the appeal, I'm going to be one of those people that isn't really able to provide a good reason. I'm not sure why. It just appeals to me for some reason. I think some of it is to do w/the fact that I think both Gwen and Ianto are probably the two characters w/the most in common, at least in terms of interactions w/people. Ianto is certainly much more 'in' Torchwood than Gwen, I think, but except for Gwen, he has to interact w/the 'outside' more than any of the other members (it's part of his position w/in the organisation). There's also the whole 'I just randomly cheated on my boyfriend'/'I stashed my half-cyberised girlfriend in the basement' aspect too. And plus, I'm sorry, but they're both just so pretty. If something ever did happen b/t them, it'd more than likely just be a one-off.
I still ship Jack/Ianto primarily.
How do you feel about Gwen and PC Andy relationship? (either on-screen or in fic).
I've never given it much thought, really. Well until 2.11. Andy sort of creeps me out, not sure why. I mean he's not overtly creepy or anything, but there is just this weird, I don't know, vibe going on there. I probably woudln't read a fic that featured them as the primary pairing. I don't actually read a lot of Torchwood fic, either, but when I do it's mainly Jack and Ianto or simply gen-fic.
What are your feelings on Gwen's character development this series?
She's much more developed this series than she was in the last. While I liked her in the first series overall, there were whole episodes where I just couldn't stand her. That hasn't happened this series. I think that she has grown up some. Torchwood has certainly changed her. In some ways for the good, some ways for the not so good. I think she's learned to appreciate the total awesomeness that is Rhys, but I still think that old habits die hard and that she still needs a little reminder ever so often of what really matters (eg., like in Adrift). She still jumps to conclusions too easily, which is annoying, but I can't hate her for it b/c I do the same (and I would argue that a lot of people do). She still needs to learn that sometimes she doesn't always know best (eg., Jack does have his reasons for things, ethical or not debates aside).
As for why I like her . . . well all of the above. She is so totally flawed but still a decent person at the same time. I'm not saying she isn't annoying, b/c she can be (a lot, but most people are), but if I had to pick someone to be my friend, she'd win out over a good 2/3 of the people I know. The one thing I would like to see more than anything on the show is more Gwen and Tosh interactions as friends. It's nice to see two females on a RTD show who seem to get along and like ea other w/o any of the jealousy undercurrent going on. The scene in Something Borrowed comes to mind.
Anyway, sorry for the tl; dr. I could write a book on this subject, but I won't here b/c I feel that that could be rude of me.

Sad sad sad...especially because a threesome with Jack/Ianto could be soooo much better! ;-)
Actually, my sister would be a bit like that. Not homophobic, but she'd much rather a single Jack because she totally has the hots for him. Oh and she's a Gwen hater as well, so she definitely doesn't want a Gwack pairing!

Love you Tosh/Owen icon :D Maybe if they spent a little less time focusing on Gwen they could focus more on Tosh.

And I've grown to rather like the idea of Tosh/Owen, even if the woman really is a walking curse.

Secondly, shit like what you said is NOT welcome here. Its one thing to dislike/hate character, but to wish death to the person playing it? Complete shit.....
And to call an entire community homophobic? You need to watch your comments.

So to be polite we don't like those sort of comments here

If you don't mind me asking, what exactly do you like about her? Personally, I have a very hard time relating to the character, so I would love to hear your opinion.

I think a lot of people don't like her because she's the conscience of the group, "the heart" like Uncle Rusty described her, like the girl who never skips class or church... and this especially doesn't go with the fact that she then proceeded to cheat on her boyfriend, but I think that was there to show how Torchwood screws with your head and what a slippery slope she tumbled down. I didn't like the Owen/Gwen premise but by then I already loved her character.
I'm not really a Gwen/Jack shipper anymore, but I also love their interactions - she brings something out in Jack that I can't put my finger on. Like she's the one person on the team who hasn't yet been swallowed whole by Torchwood and on the one hand, he wishes she would be, because Torchwood is his only family and I see him as being slightly possessive/protective of them, but on the other hand he's desperate for her to hold on to that lifeline.
It's kind of hard to explain why I love a character... but I hope I made some sort of point clear instead of rambling. XD

You did just fine.
Thanks for sharing your feelings about Gwen, it's always interesting to see how other people see the characters, especially when I don't see them the same way.

Then there's the conscience bit. Has she actually even got a conscience? You see, to me she hasn't.
Anyhow, it was interesting that someone actually tried to explain sensibly why they like her, without mentioning her hair or other rubbish like that. So thanks much.

Re: Gwen
That's where I see a separation, though... the way she handles her own life and the way she handles her job, cases she has control over. It's like "no good deed goes unpunished" - she needs to be out and protect the world and protect Rhys at the same time but she gets crap for it.
I didn't like it that she cheated on him and what she did to him in Combat but I attribute that to the slippery slope and she felt incredibly guilty for it. But she did also get crap for things she was justified for, like staying out late saving the universe.
I suppose she just has moral ambiguities and we can't pretend those don't exist - every single person out there is the same way.
And yeah, I like her hair but that's not enough, lol.

I'm so torn on this. I'm a died-in-the-wool Jack/Ianto fan, and absolutely cannot see Jack settling down with Gwen, even if the writers do decide to sell out and go that route (which would most likely make me stop watching the show), but there are moments when I like Gwen as a character, and love seeing her with Rhys and/or PC Andy. Most of the time, though, I kind of want to smack her.
In other words, while I can understand that people might like her, I'm actually tempted to join the AGA, and I'm not at all tempted to join HoC. (Would I have to hate her every second in order to join this comm, or would it be okay if I just hated her about eighty percent of the time?)

P.S. I cannot sympathize with or condone the comment that wished Eve Myles would die, however humorous the intent may have been, so if that's a prerequisite, I'll run along.

That's ok. I don't exactly hate Gwen myself, I just find her very irritating most of the time (not to mention she seems poorly written).
If you'd like to hear my thoughts I posted a Character Mem (http://community.livejournal.com/antigwenallies/36369.html#cutid1).
From:

It is NO way a prerequisite, and I actually condemn the person who posted that anonymously. It's out of line. It's one thing to dislike a character.....its a completely out of line to wish death to the person who plays the character.

fightsheated debates on why, but I never get a real answer. She does like Ianto, but wants Jack to get with Gwen *shudder*.I don't understand Gwen's appeal, seriously.

That is so true. Most of the trouble she gets into seens to be because she thinks she knows better than Jack, and doesn't listen.

Of course, this made me see Gwen's gap right away and wonder why it was not put right when she was young. You can't fix mine but a gap is so easy.
