More proof that Gwen constantly fucks up.....
Courtesy of Promethea over at Television Without Pity.
Man, what a depressing episode. I feel like having a cry now, like several characters at the end. Basically, Gwen tries to help someone and unfortunately makes things ten times worse for them.
PC Andy has had a crush on her for some years. He thinks she's become "hard" working at Torchwood and challenges her to care about ordinary people again. Rhys (who continues to be awesome) also does this by trying to discuss whether they should have children. This is the only thing they agree on as Andy thinks Rhys is too fat and Rhys thinks Andy's crush is hilarious.
The woman from Gavin & Stacey's son went missing, as did a lot of other people. Gwen gets Tosh to investigate Rift activity but Jack bans her from going on with the investigation (just after she walks in on him and Ianto going at it - standing up, half naked, I think it's meant to be tres sexy but I actually found it quite funny because they're so sloppy about it!). Ianto secretly slips Gwen some info and she tracks down the missing people to a small island with an underground psychiatric hospital. The son who was a teenager is now 40-something and burned, because he fell through into the middle of a dying alien planet, or something. Jack believes the missing are best cared for in private, but Gwen believes that the desperately grieving mother deserves to see her son. Sadly that proves to be a bad idea. The mother's life is ruined, the son's life is ruined, everyone is sad, Gwen cries ... meep.
So basically, life is hard, working for Torchwood is harder, what's the point of anything? Good acting but this ep is too downbeat for me.
How many times does the woman have to fuck up completely before Jack retcon's her ass?
On the other side, my little Janto fangirl heart exploded from squee.....

'just after she walks in on him and Ianto going at it - standing up, half naked...' It's about bloody time.
'PC Andy has had a crush on her for some years.' *groans* why does every man fall in love with her? I can't be because of her personality.

must be prolonged exposure to her, close proximity must cause a serious slide in IQ among the Torchwood team!
argh! (though I can't wait to see Jack and Ianto) ;)

Retcon, schmetcon. I'd like to see Jack exercise Starfleet Captain's Rule #10: If a
crewteam member is a sanctimonious coward who continually gets us all into trouble throughhis greedher incompetence, I shall, after the third or fourth episode of this behavior, act to preserve myself and other comrades only, and lethimher be destroyed by the messheshe made forhimselfherself. From:

Gwen
Actually---Eve seems odd to me as well. This is very unfortunate.

Re: Gwen
as for Eve - I've been accused of letting my feelings for her character bleed over in to my reaction to the actress - after all how many times can we be told by Russell, Julie, Chris, Burn, Naoko, Kai, Gareth and even John what a wonderful person she is - SIGH - my issues is that she seems thoroughly oblivious to the negative reaction that Gwen is garnering and that she also appears to completely BUY the whole Gwen and Jack love each other thing *retch* - and frankly she way way way over does the widening of the eyes things when she acts - it's like a trick she learned somewhere and it's become her trademark and virtually ONLY real reaction to things
