Next batch of Torchwood books coming out August 4th.

New books coming out on the Amazon.uk website are prequels of Miracle Day. The first one is Torchwood: Long Time Dead with Suzie on the front and it looks like the Millennium Centre behind her and she appears to be standing on torn up concrete. Apparently they decide to excavate the Hub and Suzie's body is missing. The second book is Torchwood: The Men Who Sold The World and has only Rex on the front with a big gun. Rex is investigating the disappearance of a CIA squad that was transporting secret Torchwood cargo. The third book is titled Torchwood: First Born with Gwen holding the baby and Rhys standing behind her over her left shoulder. It is about Gwen and Rhys protecting "their daughter as they stand alone in the defence of the Earth".

No Jack in any of them.

I wonder why I didn't get a notice from amazon.us. I'm surprised I got one from amazon.uk. I haven't bought any books since the third set of 3 - Pack Animals, Almost Perfect, and Skypoint - came out. I read the first 9 and they were boring and disappointing IMHO, so I didn't bother to waste my money on the others.

Ok. Amazon.uk said that the books are being released on August 4th, so it seemed weird that the books would be available here in the US before the release date. I wonder why Kindle released it so soon.

Because Torchwood is an American show now. Oh dear... I do hope Starz didn't front any money for merchandizing too... Only fans buy that stuff, and RTD chased them all away because he only wants viewers.

I stopped buying the books before COE was even mentioned because I found them boring, disappointing, too much Gwen, little to no Janto. Almost Perfect was touted as being full of Janto-goodness but I thought it has as much Janto-goodness as COE did. For Janto, I much prefered Pack Animals as I found Jack as involved with Ianto in AP as he was in COE.

As is common knowledge, for Janto - or indeed for any properly good writing in the TW universe - savvy folks normally turn to fanfiction. =) The non-commercial kind.

Oh, you mean that gay guy on Miracle Day. Why should he have a book about him, he's not a main character.

Is Jack now Gwen? I'm not watching MD, but from what I've heard I wondered if now that Gwen is the hero lead and there are new characters at the forefront, is Jack now taking more of a former Gwen-like role? That would be the ultimate insult, wouldn't it.

Jack doesn't appear to be in any of these new books. They are all prequels to MD.

I haven't watched MD. Previews I've seen have not made me one little bit interested in it.

Between the sleeping around, the whiny attitude, the pathetic crush on the main character and the general standing around being useless, I'd say we're getting pretty close. Hell, at least Jack doesn't have a significant other to cheat on anymore and has the virtue of being somewhat selfless.

No. From what I've seen, he's more like S1 & S2 PC Andy, but with an overcoat. Whatever role Jack is taking, it's not Gwen-like.

Agreed. Also, if it's pre-MC then how the h*ll do we know Rex? Doesn't make much sense to have a book on him if it's supposed to take place before we meet him. Either that or I'm just a little crazy, either option is perfectly understandable.

MORE books? No thank you. I stopped buying after the set with Pack Animals. I found mediocre fanfic to frequently be better written than the books. (Then COE happened, and there's no way I'm going to give TW any more of my "viewer" money.)

I personally liked Bay of the Dead. It wasn't Gwen-centric, and you could see the other characters in action. There were also zombies, which was a personal enjoyment for me.

Pah! I tried to post this earlier but lj 'ate' my comment- so if this turns up twice, apologies.
I only ever bought one book- Twilight Streets- and it was supposed to be a 'good' one; I would say it was averagely written and the plot wasn't half as good as I was led to believe... I'd say that unless you are looking for canon 'plotlines' or 'Jack/Ianto', go for fanfiction. Some of it is better written and usually the plot is less full of holes.

Out of the first 6 Twilight Streets was the best one, which doesn't say much for the the rest of them.

When are you updating Jack's Angels? You left it in the middle of a story. It's one of my favorite nonalien stories.

Sin Eaters. It's an audiobook not a novel, but I think it's the best of the bunch. Probably being able to listen to Gareth's lovely Welsh vowels reading it to me has a lot to do with my appreciation. ;) Jack and Ianto spend time out in the field investigating together. I think it's time for another listen.

I agree that "Almost Perfect" was very disappointing. I thought "Risk Assessment" (also by James Goss) had some cute moments re: Janto. These are all post Exit Wounds, so if you want the whole team you'll have to choose something older. I was going for the best Janto in my own choices. And then, really, 99% of the fanfic is 100% better than any of the books (except Sin Eaters, and that's 'cause of Gareth's voice).

I'd like to suggest a couple of the audio books - specifically "The Sin Eaters", the only one read by Gareth David-Lloyd. There are a lot of lovely Janto moments, and a beautiful bit where Gwen is forced to admit how jealous she us of Ianto. Also, "Into the Darkness", read by Eve Myles is quite good for some nice Janto moments (Ianto saves Jack!) and some rather Gwen-unfriendly moments.
Also, its heartbreaking but the last of the latest radio plays is worth listening to, especially for the last couple of minutes.
