A few days ago I posted a character mem on my journal and
haces222 asked me to do one for Gwen. I thought everyone here might like to see my thoughts on Gwen. I honestly had no idea there were so many things I hated about Gwen until I wrote them down.
Slight Gwen-related spoilers for KKBB, Meat and Series 1.
1) What is your opinion of this character?
I don't really care for Gwen. I think she is very poorly written in general; her job within Torchwood is suppose to be 'alien profiler' but how exactly *do* you profile an alien, now (Series 2) she's second in command but we were told in Series 1 that that was Owen's job. The writers also tell us that she is the 'heart' of the team but show her do really horrible things; cheating on Rhys, lying to him (even in the very first episode). She really seems like a Mary-Sue; in Series 1 she was the only member of the team who didn't lose their lover, in most episodes she gets taken hostage(KKBB) but doesn't die, and she has never had to pay for her actions (she confesses about her affair with Owen but then retcons Rhys, and when she refused to retcon him [Rhys] in 'Meat' she should have at least been suspended or fired). She seems too immature/reckless to be a PC let alone a member of a secret organization. I also have a real problem with how the writers seem to be forcing a pairing (Jack/Gwen) that doesn't really work; the Jack/Gwen scenes always seem very forced. If the writers do put Jack/Gwen together it would make the show all about them and completely change Jack as a character.
2) Is she important to the general plot?
Sadly the writers seem to think she is. One of the things I hated about Series 1 was that she had more screen-time(05:03:43) than Jack(04:18:00). Series 2 seems to have more evenly distributed screen-times, but still...
3) Can you relate to this character at all? Do they grip you emotionally?
I have never been able to relate to Gwen at all. I think that my have to do with the poor writing and the fact that Eve tends to rely too much on facial expressions to 'tell' us how Gwen is feeling, instead of conveying it.
4) Do you ship this character with any other character?
Not at all. I tend to ship characters I can relate too; no matter how much the writers push Gwack, and Rhys can do sooo much better.
5) Is there anything about the character you would change?
Um... everything.
6)If you were in the fandom with this character or knew this character in real life, how do you see yourself interacting with him/her?
I don't really think I would get along with her at all. She seems like the kind of person who would just irritate me. Plus I want to smack her every time she makes eyes at Jack, especially if Ianto and/or Rhys are standing *right there*.
7) Is this character popular with the fanbase?
From what I've seen people don't like her, mostly because of the way she treats Rhys (even the actor who plays him thinks Gwen is eventually going to cheat on him with Jack).
AN: I'd love to hear what everyone else thinks.

'As to her 'sympathetic' role, Janet the Weevil is a more sympathetic character than her. Stand a plank of wood in the middle of a scene, and it would be better liked than her, (if you could even tell the difference, of course.)' Hahaha... maybe for Series 3 they could just use a life-size card broad cutout of Gwen. I bet no one would notice, and it would be more liked :D

As for whether people like her character---no-one I know, who watches the show, does. I just wish the writers would DO something to make her more acceptable to me---er----killing her would be good.

a big issue I have at the moment is that my feelings for Gwen have bled over into my reactions to Eve - I absolutely abhor her little 'Inside Torchwood' tidbits that BBC America shares with us each week - the one with Martha she was gushy about how great it was to work with Freema and that it was wonderful to have another 'girly' on the set - I wanted to vomit! - hell 98% of these Inside Torchwood tidbits have been Eve and Burn (weighted more towards Eve of course) SIGH
I've just found Eve - the person we see in interviews, etc. - to be nearly as annoying as Gwen and that's sad....
sigh

'I've just found Eve - the person we see in interviews, etc. - to be nearly as annoying as Gwen and that's sad....' Oh yes, that is sad. You know what is really sad, from some of the interviews I've read Eve doesn't think that Gwen is a bad character.

Sadly the writers seem to think she is.
One of the things I read about the show during season 1, was that Gwen was going to be the 'gateway' character, that is that she'd be our window into Torchwood, we'd know as much as she did and learn about Torchwood as she did.
Which would have been fine if Gwen hadn't been so self righteous and holier than thou from her very first ep.
'Day one' and she's there and accusing her co-workers of being unfeeling because they're daring to have lunch while Cerys is locked in the cells. (oh the humanity!)
If TPTB had really wanted to show us Torchwood from a novice's eyes, they could have easily used Ianto who was clearly just as inexperienced when it came to Torchwood fieldwork.

'If TPTB had really wanted to show us Torchwood from a novice's eyes, they could have easily used Ianto who was clearly just as inexperienced when it came to Torchwood fieldwork.' I wish they would have used Ianto, I've always been able to relate to him. I guess they needed a token female lead-- why they didn't use Tosh (as the lead) I'll never know.

oh now this I would have LOVED!!!!! Gareth is a much better actor than Eve

I am firmly convinced that if Gwen had stayed in the police force that she would have ended up shagging Andy the first time she had a really bad day and 'needed somebody to talk to'.

But, no, I hate Gwen.

I think that's part of her problem. She doesn't actually have any useful skills...at least none that really help Torchwood any. Probably the only reason she was nominally in charge in Jack's absence was because everybody else was too busy doing actual work.

I love LOVE Kai.
And my friend and I believe he should have a reassuring chat with Gareth and John for they BOTH do not see a Gwack happening.

That may be, but if the writers want Gwack is what we'll get.
Nice icon by the way.
