WARNING!  Spoilers for the first of the Torchwood radio plays!
The first radio play was a throwback to the good old days of series 1 & 2 with action, adventure and humour. The main four characters were, well, within character, with some lovely moments between Jack/Ianto and Gwen/Rhys. Gwen did have the greatest amount of air time but not by much and the fact that Jack and Ianto spent a lot of the play working as a wonderful, comic, sarcastic team more than made up for that.

And how was our heroine?  Sooper Cooper?  Well she got beaten up and imprisoned by an 80 year old woman - not exactly superhero material, our Gwennie.  This was after she went off, on her own, no back up, to visit a possible site of alien activity - brains apparently do not come as standard for The Gweninator.

Still, as for the play itself, I thoroughly enjoyed it, the only downside being that MD was advertised before it started and MD, as we all know, is no relation to Torchwood.

I'm listening to it now. Just at the bit where Gwen gets pwned by an 80 year old, trolololol.

When I got to that part, I thought Gwen was shot and strangled only to find out that she was only getting an ass kicking and being tied up. I was very disappointed..

And a friend pointed out to me:

Ms Carew was born in 1930...and she's 81.

This means this play takes place in 2011.

Methinks the writer just jossed both CoE and MD... :)

LOL! Well, considering how poorly the brand new Gwenwood is doing, I believe the writer of the radio play has every right to joss it however, whenever and wherever he wants :)

Further proof that RTD needs to be removed from TW and that TW needs to be given to *anyone* else whose name doesn't contain the letters RTD, if the Beeb wants the show to be still successful.

But.. but my name is Rabindranath Tagore Das and I really want to write for Torchwood!

Just joking! That's not my name.

milady didn't realize that fact i was to busy listening to the guys banter and the fact that gwen had her butt kicked a golden girl. so rusty must have control over the radio plays or didn't worry about them.

I'm just wondering how on earth Rhys managed to find the exact basement where Gwen was tied up.

Also, when did Gwen learn how to hack into computer systems?

Yes there were a few of those plot holes in the play, but you see, the writers of the plays aren't allowed to produce something that's better than RTD's work, so they are required to put some in. ;)

Yeah, nobody can be more brillant than him. Which is sad because... anyone can be more brilliant than him.

Very enjoyable. Actually, it wasn't the total Gwen love-fest that I expected. I had a great time mocking and making fun of Gwen through the whole thing, lots of opportunities for that. Kinda hated how it sorta appears she saved the world (with Jack and Ianto getting there after it was all over) -- but it was really Rhys who did because he's the one that released her, so I can live with that. Rhys is so much more awesome than Gwen. He saves the world and he hoovers! ;)

Rhys really is awesome. Someone who can keep the house clean and the world from exploding is worth having around.

How come i can never find a guy like rhys? Now i have 2 pictures in my head thanks to that plot 1) Rhys in a pink apron pushing a kirby vacuume andholding a gun and 2) my 76 yr old grandma beating up Eve M with her cane. sorry for the spelling mistakes. I suck at spelling.

Silly plot was silly! Rhys was pretty bad-assed. Jack and Ianto banter. Gwen gets locked up. Works for me, LOL.

this should open up the radio program.

It was awesome listening to Gwen get kidnapped by an 80 year old.

Hey, my Mum is almost eighty, and she would shut Gwen into the broom closet without breaking a sweat. Cos my Mum is nifty and smart and versatile - all things the Teflon Tart is not!

and your mom would lose the key for no last minute rescues by the other lovely welshman.

Anyone have a DL link. My bandwidth is a little low at the moment and listening to a podcast or livestream is a little hard.

So I've listening to the whole thing now. I found some bits enjoyable - the Janto banter was great, and listening to Gwen get owned by the granny was great! But generally, I found it a bit of a poor ending. I mean, the world is saved because someone slipped? Seriously? Just seemed like an anti-climax. I'm looking forward to Wednesday's more, as it was written by James Goss, the brilliant writer who gave us 'Almost Perfect' and 'Virus'. Also, in a Radio 4 review, it says there's a 'special surprise for Ianto fans'. Wonder what that is...

From: [identity profile] ruby-took.livejournal.com

I could have sworn that 'Virus' is by James Moran...
Anyway, I'm looking forward to tomorrow's episode as well, although I'm a bit wary about the special surprise for Ianto fans. I kind of wish there were more than three radio plays - at least these are the old Torchwood I remember and love, slightly silly plots and all.

From: [identity profile] hydrojen90.livejournal.com

You're right XD Stupid me.
And I agree, I wish there were more of these. Like, a whole series... More Janto!

James Goss wrote Risk Assessment. Which ended on a strange note, almost a cliff hanger that screwed with canon and had no resolution. So who knows what he might come up with for the play.

Spoiler for book below:

At the end of Risk Assessment, Torchwood had been shut down by a person who had the authority to do it, and Jack, Ianto, and Gwen were retconned. Very strange ending, left me wondering how that heck they were supposed to have fixed things. And how that was supposed to fit with canon?! I think maybe Goss has a special canon dispensation and can write whatever he wants. LOL.
