This is from kelticbanshee's journal.  She has given me permission to post it here.  I thought it might raise a few smiles;

'So, I work with someone who lives in Cardiff, pretty much on the Bay. Someone who watched Torchwood because it was filmed in Cardiff, in the same way as I watch Casualty to do a bit of Bristol-spotting. We've had the odd chat about the show, the move to America, the wisdom (or lack thereof) of killing way too many characters too quickly, and the changes in tone of the show.

I happened to mention to him today what some of the people who have already seen the first episode (or first few episodes) of Miracle Day are saying about it.

When I got to the frequently heard "Gwen is still her awesome self", he sort of snorted and gave me a sideways look. Then he added "Me me me whine whine whine I-am-right-and-you-are-wrong me me me Gwen? Are they watching the same show as I did?"

That made me smile.

Can't remember the exact conversation when we discussed other points that have been mentioned by those who have already watched, but all his reactions reinforced my belief that at least a portion of the casual viewers agree with my views on the show. (Yes, I did reword that a few times, I'm trying to be polite and diplomatic here)'

But you see, that's what RTD truly loves about casual viewers, they don't SAY their views out loud. They only watch it because it's on, with a hint of preference maybe, because it was filmed in their city or because it has a nice style. If I watch CSI: miami (my casual watch show) I really don't care who dies or who doesn't, I don't get inside the characters heads and half the time I'm doing other things while watching it.

If they replace Torchwood with Warehouse 13, the casual viewers will just go "meh, whatever, I'll just watch that then". Casual viewers don't do the fanstuff, don't buy the mags, don't buy the dvd's, don't go to conventions. They are, in essence, just silent moneycows to keep a show in the air and keep everyone paid by watching the commercials or paying the channel.

No, seriously, I've said it at other journals, Right now it doesn't sound like anyone at Torchwood was thinking 'this is something people will really love!' It just sounds like 'this is something that will get me another ballroom in my golden palace.'

So heaven forbid someone is criticizing your mediocre piece of shit. Because you'll get paid by the casuals anyway. You're 'just doing your job'. Does a cleaning lady feel like defending the toilet she's just cleaned, of course not, she's getting paid by the hour. Does she feel like participating in conversations to get a better end-result? Fuck no! she'll just get annoyed if you tell her the toilet would be better cleaned if maybe she used a different brand. The only thing she'll say is "It looks fine and if you don't like it, go shit somewhere else".

the same techniques are used for Gwen and CoE: "You don't like it? Fuck you, you're not a real fan, piss off!" this lovely attitude was taken over by many of the fans who DID like Gwen and CoE and they rampaged the web with it. Anger arose among the other fans and anger isn't as easily dissolved as dislike...This is why things like saveiantojones are still existing, because no-one, but GDL, (bless him, but he was out of the Torchwood system) had the common sense to say, 'hey guys, we know you miss him and that's cool, we love that you cared enough about this character to raise money and stuff but we made that decision because we think it was the right one.'

You can really tell that Torchwood just isn't quite as loved as it used to be, since every damn interview has people openly showing their dislike. NOW, I'm sorry PTB, but really, are you going with the it's always the same haters that post on the interviews...if so, then I would like to respond that it is always the same nine fanpoodles that keep kissing your collective asses.

I solely dedicate the angry tone of this message to me watching Inglourious Basterds yesterday.

I like the me, me, me, whine description of Gwen. Golly, she's such a pain in the ass to listen to.

I really don't give a flying crap what happens with Miracle Day, Torchwood ended when they killed off too many core characters.

In the real world Gwen is a red shirt, too little experience, too stupid, she would have been Weevil chow in the first season.

Hahaha, too true. She was almost Weevil chow in the very first episode... But then that poor soul had to get in her way and take the hit for her (I'm sure RTD pushed him into the hallway).

Oh, that that poor hospital orderly hadn't got in the Weevil's way...

XD Perfect! That just shows that no-one is buying the 'Gwen is awesome!' boll... nonsense.

Does Kelticbanshee know of the series 'Afterlife'? It's set in Bristol, it's about a psychic medium and a parapsychologist, and it is truly amazing, not as in 'gwen is amazing', it is /genuinely/ AMAZING.
