There is currently a poll for fav TV characters at 2011 Fandom Steel Cage Match March Madness.  Doctor Who and The Sarah Jane Adventures are mixed in with Torchwood, so as you would expect, The Doctor (11, at the moment) is by far the most popular character.  However, of the TW characters, Ianto is currently leading with 204 votes, Jack has 171, Tosh has 25, Owen 22 and Gwen Cooper, Teflon Tart, is last with 21!

Yay!

Here is the link if you want to see how Gwennie Poo fares (or vote in any of the varied categories);

The thing I find very interesting about this poll and Gwen (and she finished with a pathetic 0.5) is that the voters in these polls were not in any way misogynistic. Scrolling through all the winners, a big percentage were female characters and they often won by large margins. I was even surprised by some of the winners (like Parker in Leverage beating the sex symbol heart-throb Eliot). And Gwen still had only a handful of votes. So there you go. Next time anyone accuses you of hating women because you don't like Gwen, you can point them to these polls.

Frankly it boggles my mind how she is so obviously disliked by most of fandom yet TPTB continue to act as if she's the favorite and promote her as the Star of Torchwood (it's not just RTD who's doing it). I wish someone could explain that to me because it makes no sense at all and I don't think I'll ever understand it.

OTOH, Gwen is so "popular" that she has a whole LJ community devoted to hating her. Not many characters can say that.

Actually, somewhere in the back of my mind I remembered that Ginny and Hermione also have these sort of communities devoted to them. bĂșt considering the reach of the audience between Torchwood and Harry Potter, I'd say it's pretty impressive Gwen got one.

If I were TPTB, I'd have ditched Gwen as a long time ago, or just write some character growth for her (It's possible, TW turn left community did a lovely job of it). But hell, they thought, 'Hey, let's do the complete opposite and kill everyone else'. The Jack we knew died with Steven, all that's left is some de-evolved shell of himself, after all, how does someone NOT lose their humanity after being blown up, bereft of a lover and forced to kill his grandson. Especially when said humanity was shaky at best after spending 2000 year in the ground...Hell, I'm not convinced Jack is going to survive miracle day physically anyway.

I wouldn't even get too attached to the new characters, since Rex has already showed up sporting a nice hole in his chest, ya know, the kind you might die of if you're not immortal.

There are plenty of female characters that I can name in and out of the Who'verse who I love, but apparently hating Gwen is misogynistic. What always shocks me is how RTD can claim that he can't be hating on a gay because of what he's been through being a gay. But apparently the girls who hate Gwen are womenhaters...
