Dude, I just saw Journey's End again on CBC last night, and Gwen was actually tolerable when she suggested going out shooting even if it's useless...but the one who realllly kicked ass, even post-mort, was Toshiko Sato, with the TimeLock. Why oh why did they keep Gwen again?

...which brings us to, when did Gwen EVAR save the day? The way I see it, every flaw a person has, he/she has to make up with it with one point of awesome, like, BunnyEarsLawyer, big example being Jack Harkness. Heart is NOT a plus point, unless Jack had brought Gwen in as the new coffee girl, someone hired for Heart alone should not be out on the field! She's Useless!

They advertise Gwen as saving the day in CoE, and that's BULLSHIT. Lois save the day by giving them intel, Jack saved the day in the end by crossing the moral events horizon, Gwen just ran around crying her head off. If I was her, knowing the soldiers was coming, I would have hid the kids somewhere ELSE way earlier, or, set up trap. If the soldiers are following orders to abduct children, it's okay to shoot them, not because they deserve it, but because it's necessary. (...and I can just imagine the Doctor's reaction now, "Why didn't ANYONE call me?")

...they had Gwen kissing Jack after staying by his side but she's the n00b, and the kiss did nothing.

If she had l335 skillz like Suzie or John, I would have tolerated her being a psycho to Rhys, but she had no awesome skillz to counter all her personality flaws at all, she's the Paris Hilton of Sci-Fi, but I know I would rather spend the night with Paris than Gwen, even knowing what Paris has...because at least Paris is honest about being shallow!

...and gods, I'm just going to ignore canon, and pretend that Gwen was either never hired, fired, died, or actually does not suck by not mooning at Jack, and that the series went in the Jantosh direction. You guys you guys, totally listen to Look Up by Stars:

Your boy is like a memory
With some sense of touch and a melody
Your girl she's a renegade
A hurricane that keeps you there, safe'

...that's totally Ianto and Tosh to Jack! Ianto is so young but he's so much memory (and I think parts of Ianto actually reminds Jack of the Doctor, they have similar body type at least). Tosh might seem quiet, but she's actually deeply passionate...she just doesn't go into hysterics while on the job the way Gwen does. Timelock baby! ...and as Ianto has brought up in Countrycide, Tosh loves the thrill. While the Gwen and Ianto moment was cute in Adrift, it's got NOTHING compared to Ianto and Tosh.

I just wish that Tosh had made it to the DW crossover instead of Gwen. :(

Indeedy!
It's like a 'pros and cons' set of scales:

IANTO
Cons:
Brought Cybergirl into Hub
Pros:
Can fix the 'phone system, good coffee, looks good in a suit, the odd witty/sarcastic comment, good with a stun gun etc etc

OWEN
Cons:
Sarky and rude to virtually everyone
Pros:
Good doctor, gets to run around with guns and gets the job done.

TOSH
Cons:
Not quite sure what they are! The Mary Debacle!
Pros:
Awesome computer skills, The Time Bubble, willingness to get tetanus by writing messages in her own blood etc

JACK
Cons:
Ability to strangely release doom upon earth sometimes via his family and exes
Pros:
Immortality, cheesy flirting, gets to run around with guns and the Doctor, willing to 'sacrifice himself for humanity etc

Last but not least GWEN
Cons:
Shags Owen whilst going out with Rhys, releases alien sex gas, destroys Nicky's hope in 'Adrift', willing to lie to her family in 'Something Borrowed' (how IS she going to explain loss of baby/alien child to her family WITHOUT having to Retcon them all??), possible collateral deaths of family and friends at said wedding, letting Suzy get out to see her father, Retconning Rhys etc etc
Pros
Help me here! I'm having difficulty! oh, yeah, "going out shooting even if it's useless" in Stolen Earth.
Although 2 guys I know might say looks "cute", but at least one states she DOES have character flaws that he's ignoring!

All in all, you're right- the "Gwen characater equation" DOES not stack up!!!

Presumably why most viewers (inc men) that i know can't stand her!!

OH word!

Ianto tracks down where Jack is being held, makes his way to the base, sets up a rescue operation that would probably have worked a hell of a lot better if he hadn't had to drag Gwen and Rhys out of the firing line as well.

But what did we get to see? Gwen and Rhys head to London on a pile of potatoes. Gwen meets with Lois and gets her magical rescue plan literally handed to her. Gwen and Rhys hijack an undertaker. Gwen gets hit on, Rhys gets pissed. Gwen and Rhys get shown around the base. Gwen and Rhys get captured. Too bad the next shot wasn't Gwen and Rhys going down in a hail of bullets as Ianto arrives just too late to save them. Ugh.

"But what did we get to see? Gwen and Rhys head to London on a pile of potatoes"

Such drama and tension! Well done RTD!I am still incredibly irked that a significant number of Ianto's lines were READING SOMEONE ELSE'S WORDS out via Lois' shorthand! Another point for scriptwriting to be awarded there, I think!

"....Too bad the next shot wasn't Gwen and Rhys going down in a hail of bullets as Ianto arrives just too" late to save them."

I like that scenario MUCH better. Just as I liked your scene that could have been in "The Best Laid Plans(?)".
That was surely a more realistic take on what Ianto would have said (after all he was bright enough to get ut of Canary Wharf with a cybergirl- not one to go into Thames Ho with NO plan whatsoever!?).

I'm still furious that RTD and the writers wasted all the potential they had with Tosh and WHY did they have to make her pine uselessly after Owen?! She deserved so much better than that.

If you notice, every time Tosh (or the team) is in trouble, she tries to think rationally of a solution, whereas Gwen is always so busy wanting to know about everybody's 'feelings' and 'emotions' and smothering them with her 'caring' attitude!

From: [identity profile] jennelldhalrbj.livejournal.com

The explanation for all this is that RTD is a crap writer and totally overrated. My thought is that he must have, as they say, something "on" the Director General {or whatever the title is} of the BBC and a host of other folk as well-----

{Sorry for this thought-- I was up late last night with 20 month old and am 6 months pregnant with Triplets. We are calling them Joshua, Joseph and Aimee-Rose by the way.}

Re: Triplets!

Where we live you only get state help {as far as I know} if you have Quads---and we have 4 other kids already----thanks for the congrats--

As for RTD-well---I can think of some choice words to describe him but they are all German---
