LOL...sorry about the title. Ok, posting this little ficlet here with a question: is it Gwen bashing? This was my first week entry for Writer In A Drawer, where I was pretty much told off by a few people for bashing Gwen in the story. So I leave it to you to judge.....does it? It was not intended to be (as much as I don't like Gwen, it really wasn't intentional).

“Its raw fish,” groused Owen under his breath. Using a chopstick, he poked at the offending morsel on the plate in front of him with a look of disgust.

“Why sushi?” Gwen’s whiny voice was starting to irritate Tosh.

“Because it’s Tosh’s birthday, and rule is you get to pick what lunch is on your birthday,” Jack replied as he popped another piece into his mouth and grinned at the birthday girl.

“I can’t believe you’ve never had sushi before.” Tosh gave Gwen an incredulous look.

Owen poked another piece roughly with his chopstick. “As I said; its raw fish. Who in their right mind eats raw fish?” He flushed slightly at the hurt look on Tosh’s faces.

“What’s this green stuff?” Gwen asked, peering warily into another container.

“It’s wasabi - You dip the sushi in it,” Ianto said, dipping a piece in demonstration.

“What’s wasabi? It looks funny.”

“Think of it as Japanese mustard, Gwen. Try a piece of sushi with it.” Jack and Ianto caught the mischievous look in Tosh’s eyes as she replied.

“I’m not sure,” Gwen said indecisively. “As Owen said, it is raw fish….”

“What happened to your sense of adventure?” Jack exchanged looks with Tosh and gave her a quick wink, suspecting what she was up to. “You’ll never know you like it if you don’t try it. And try the wasabi too; just dunk a piece right in there.”

They all fought to keep straight faces as Gwen sighed in resignation and used her chopsticks to pick up a piece, dunking it liberally in the wasabi. Eyeing it with doubt, she shrugged and put it in her mouth, chewing for a moment. She froze suddenly, her face flushing scarlet and her eyes beginning to water. Grabbing a napkin, she spat it out and fumbled for the bottle of water in front of her, downing it greedily.

“Hot…very hot,” she gasped painfully as the others burst into laughter.

“Oops, did I forget to mention that?” Tosh asked innocently, eyes alight with amusement. “It’s also known as Japanese horseradish.”

This was turning out to be one of the best birthdays ever in her opinion.

And if this is not allowed here, please delete....

Not so much bashing, more like bruising slightly, lol. It actually rings very true to her attitude over things she has no experience of.

Everyone has a different opinion on characters - come on, even the actual show writers can't decide how to write Gwen. Writing is subjective, no one can tell you off for anything - they can maybe correct your grammar, sure, but this is your story, your characterisation.

I just submitted a portfolio of cerative writing for my University application and when going over it with a teacher he gave me some great advice: Writing is subjective, there's no right or wrong so no matter what anyone else tells you, you've got enough talent and guts to give it a go and that is the most important part.

And I'm rambling, sorry. On a more specificnote though I believe it's realistic for Gwen not to have tried sushi and to be skeptical like that - she's supposed to be dictated as the average, ordinary person. Honestly, in this country, not as many people have tried sushi as you expect and if Gwen did I would assume it'd be a tray from M&S or somewhere.

So, maybe a tad of a bash but no more than any character has ever been given in an episode so I can't see why it would be unacceptable here.
