OK Just a head up...Spoilers for CoE (as if you haven't already been spoiled) and the Torchwood book "The Twilight Streets"...You will need to have read that to get the point of my rant/revelation

So as part of my recovery process for CoE...I re-read "The Twilight Streets" and a few things occurred to me in hindsight...

So I was reading in the parts of the book where you 'see' into the future and noticed a few similarities to CoE.

#1
Twilight Streets
Ianto sacrifices himself to save Jack...he dies basically

CoE
Ianto dies

#2
Twilight Streets
Hub is destroyed

CoE
Hub is blown up

See where I'm going with this...

But the one that really gets me

#3
Twilight Streets
Gwen has her baby, still has Rhys and lives happily ever, despite the fact that three members of the team have 'died' and she makes plans to rebuild Torchwood

CoE
Gwen is pregnant and gets her happily ever after with Rhys, while Jack mourns Ianto and Gwen makes plans to rebuild Torchwood

OK is it just me or are there just quite a few similarities here?!?
Was this a big hint at what the future held?
Or at least a hint at Gwen being the character who, not matter what, will get her 'happy ending'? I mean come on...End of Days...Twilight Streets and CoE?
I have the big feeling I have missed a huge sign that said "And Gwen lived happily ever after, with no consequences of what had happened, with no remorse, grief or anything else" I mean its not fairy tales here people?

What do you think...Am I just going mad in my Ianto Grief or is there something suss going on here?

I can see another similarity between Twilight Streets and CoE.
Both were hyped greatly as something fantastic, but both turned out to be steaming piles of horseshit.

exactly. does anyone remember who wrote twilight streets? as i am too pissed to look in my bookcase right now.

LOL! No, I think they are two different people! But the 'Twilight Streets' novel has a completely nonsensical 'plot', if you can call it that. So never trust a writer who has 'Russel' somewhere in his/her name!

Did Ianto actually die in "The Twilight Streets"? I haven't read it. It's disturbing to think that there were similarities between the book and the show. Not that it surprises me. Nothing was really different about CoE. Except that it had a bigger budget.

Thank you for responding!
Well,so much for originality in the storyline. RTD couldn't even come up with the whole story on his own (contrary to Julie Gardener's interview, where she said it was all his idea).
The book sounds horrible. I just looked it up on Wikipedia and Owen and Tosh encase Jack in amber? What are they, possessed or something, lol?
Of course,RTD would say that since the Tosh and Owen part didn't happen the whole story was vastly different. I don't know, though. It seems to be very similar-even down to some sort of revenge for something Jack did in the past.
You're not going mad in your grief. I think you're right. The show is only grounded in "realism" (read:people dying tragically and young)when it comes to the other characters. Gwen has escaped direct tragedy and probably always will unless Eve wants to leave the show.
In which case she'll probably get a much more heroic death than was given to Ianto.

I hated that about the ending, too. Gwen gets a happy ending, and even though she's upset that Jack leaves her she walks away with Rhys hugging her and she's going to have the baby, the husband and the house. Jack,on the other hand, lost his lover and his grandson, and his daughter hates him.
Yet Gwen's only thought is that he should stay for her,or come back for her (failing him staying for her).
What bothers me about her story is not that I want her to suffer, but it also irks me that she is exempt from it over and over while no one else is. If the writers want us to believe that Torchwood is tragic and so real (insert sarcasm)and that they had to sacrifice Ianto or the story would seem meaningless, then she should have had to lose something-sometime.
You're not alone in your grief over Ianto! If you want to, check out this site:

We're getting more of a presence, and we're focusing on the BBC now instead of RTD,who obviously doesn't care what we think.
