Misogyny? Really?

*sarcasm* Cause hating Gwen means we hate all women doesn't it? *eye-roll*

From: [identity profile] jennelldhalrbj.livejournal.com

Oh dear, I am a woman who is pregnant with TRIPLETS and has already 4 kids and I hate women? How weird then that my favorite character in NCIS is the Israeli agent and my favorite character in Without a Trace is the blond woman--sorry I can't think of their names as I have just been trying to find out whether, as a pregnant female with toddlers, I am allowed to even leave the house and I am not at home but with my sister.

I just don't like Gwen. I also don't like RTD--is there a word for that?

hmmm....

Seriously the people who make those things have too much time on their hands and just try to find something, anything really, to slag off.

I would be insulted if I wasn't so friggin amused. I don't like a Mary Sue incarnate character so I must hate all women. Disregarding, of course, the fact of course that I am a woman.

This is just more fandom wank made by people with nothing better to do.

But of course it isn't possible to hate one female character without hating all females. I mean that would just be impossible, and I've always really been into self-hatred.

I'm pretty sure that the majority of this community is made up of women, so really we're just a group of self haters (couldn't think of the right term, its lurking at the back of my brain).

NOTE THE SARCASM

Whoever that was has too much time and not enough productive things to do.

Lol, don't you know we're supposed to love ALL female characters, otherwise we're misogynists. Never mind having actual legitiment reasons for hating a character, no, all those reason are clearly just a barrier to hide the raging misogyny in us all! *Rolls eyes*

*giggle*

Although I do agree with one comment; Calling Gwen a ho is an insult to prostitutes everywhere (I admit to being a Belle du Jour fan), we should really rethink that.

Also, I love the 'secret' about how Jack was only with Ianto because the accent his accent was like Gwen's. Because it would have been so hard to get the actual slut into bed? Logic Fail!

ETA: did anyone bother to read the long thread which I noticed included a notorious Ianto-basher? And was it hilarious or just sad?

I hate Gwen Cooper, therefore I hate... myself??? Wow. I had no idea I was so full of self-loathing. Poor, misguided me.

Let me get this straight....
Because I hate a pitiful excuse for a Mary-Sue who has no real idea what fidelity and real compassion and competency is.
Because I dislike a badly developed, sorry excuse for a female character.
Because I still wonder why they killed off a truly intelligent, compassionate and talented woman, and let the other one have her unrealistic happy ending and live.

I'm a misogynist?

I'm a woman that hates all women because I'm not a fan but an anti of Gwen. I didn't realise that loving or hating Gwen was indicative of my feelings towards all females in general.

i adore donna/tosh/sara jane/det.swanson/capt.magambo but not gwen so now i hate my sex and am secret misogynist, glad we cleared that up. amazing i thought it was more demeaning to women that the only purpose to them was that gwen serves is as a bedmate to jack. i guess they missed the parts where jack was willing to up the world to save ianto not gwen and her unborn baby but save ianto, had gwen sent away because he could not stand to look at her(as she as his soulmate, not) and at the end of the world in front in rhys(gwen's husband for those gwackers and gwen who seem to forget) begged jack to stay, jack buggered off. oops, maybe jack is a misogynist too.

I wasn't going to continue commenting here on this thread, but I just got this response to a comment I made about the 'misogyny' issue:

The attacks on Gwen at that comm often use mysogynist language that is simply disgusting. Go ahead and say you're not misogynstic, lie all you want. That people go out of their way to be so spiteful and vicious, repeatedly, is sick. The fact that you're proud to be a member of such a place says something about you as a person, and none of it is good. Not that someone likes you care, I'm sure.

Now who's being judgmental and vicious....?

This is a very rude response which does not show the members of that particular site in a very good light.

I think it is all part of what my Husband calls the--if you don't agree with me you must be wrong--syndrome or ---you can be spiteful and viscous but only about things I hate.

I had this myself ages ago when I posted the fact that no-one I knew who watched Torchwood liked Gwen. {On another site}. The replies I had to this got more and more rude and viscous. Several people said I couldn't possibly know everyone who watched Torchwood. I then pointed out that what I said didn't mean that and was then accused of being anti-dyslexia!!!! At that point things had gotten so ridiculous that I deleted my original post and thus all the comments went too. This did not change my opinion of Gwen or Gwen fans as, judging by this, a lot of them seemed to be idiots.

think of the source, these are the same people who bash not only ianto(homophobia anyone) but attack gareth in very personal terms. if i am not a fan of woman who is spiteful towards tosh(does make gwen a misogynist, cheats on her lover, acts like 2 when she does not get her own way. the problem is not with our gwen bashing which we keep here, the bigger is ianto bashing which spills into the main list with abuse towards his fans. ugly faghags and demented "fangirls" anyone. gwen does not make me crazy because i adore ianto but because she is a mary sue of the worstkind at times.

It is not misogynist to dislike Gwen, it is miso-Gwen-ist!

On one hand, I appreciate the fact that RTD bothers to write substantial female characters in his shows. On the other hand, I do not appreciate the fact that he prefers one female character over all the other, potentially more interesting characters. What exactly is interesting or intriguing about Gwen? Especially compared to Suzie, Det Swanson and Tosh, all three of which are non-white women, highly competent in doing things that were traditionally considered to be men's work.
Did RTD never think that it might be interesting to explore the backgrounds of these women? No! Let's concentrate on darling Gwen in EVERY episode and if the audience doesn't appreciate his wonderful creation, he'll just kill all the other characters so that there won't be anybody else left to appreciate!
