...in keeping with Torchwood tradition, as established by Russell T Davies.
What should happen...
Jack returns in the first episode, saving the day just in time. Gwen gets all hot under the collar because her Jack has come back for her. A new team is established, with Jack taking the reins once more despite Gwen's illusions of self-importance as "second-in-command".
Gwen spends most of the series flirting with an oblivious Jack, whilst keeping up her "normal life" with Rhys. Because she doesn't do fidelity so well, she'll jump the bones of the first newbie that Jack hires, and then claim that it's all Torchwood's fault.
Jack is still haunted by his losses in series three. He functions, but that's pretty much all.
In the final episode, everything goes to shit again. In keeping with RTD's noble tradition, Gwen will die an unexpected, horrible and sudden death, leaving behind Rhys to raise their daughter on his own. Jack, however, will receive a mysterious message from the future New Earth hospital (prior to it's nasty little human experiments), and goes there after Gwen's tragic demise, where he discovers Ianto alive and well, after having been rescued from his death-like state by the new incarnation of the Doctor and the Face of Boe.
Jack is overjoyed at being reunited with his lover. They hold a suitable mourning period for their dead colleague (three minutes' worth), before deciding to leave with the Doctor and travel the universe together.
Thoughts, anyone...???

Seriously, though, we wouldn't want to be mollycoddled here, would we? I think we all need to brace ourselves for the utter tragedy of losing Gwen in the next series. Because Torchwood is a dangerous place, and there's not always a 'happily ever after' to look forward to.
Right...?

Torchwood is only dangerous if you're part of the Big Gay Agenda - Tosh slept with Mary (both got killed), Owen used the spray and sometimes had to sleep with the guys (he got killed), Jack slept with lots of men (and got killed lots of times) and Ianto only slept with Jack ... and only got killed the once ...
Gwen lives because she only snogged a girl.
Well that and she's the symbolic, supreme, married, pregnant, white female.

Jack comes back, and saves Gwen.
Gwen tries to corner Jack into having an affair, she succeeds gets pregnant finds out its Jack's baby, Jack stays and gets brow-beaten so much that he follows her around proclaiming shes the heart of Torchwood and he can't live without her.
End of season she tells Rhys shes pregnant with his child, while keeping Jack on the side. Gwen dies violently and gruesomely after giving birth by a person at Flat Holm. Jack realizing he's been drugged and Rhys is actually dead, takes the baby and transports himself to an AU and Ianto is alive, they live there till the Doctor takes back Jack to his original AU..............
ohhhhh it was a good daydream! *sigh*

My brother in law, Tom Jones, {yes he is called Tom Jones} said he didn't watch Torchwood. My sister, Gisela, said Jack should come back and he and Rhys should fall madly in love. Rhys would then leave Gwen, telling her various unpleasant home truths first.
My niece is away, but I asked my nephew Gareth and he said he didn't care what happened as long as Gwen died a horrible death. He said he watched Torchwood because he likes Sci-fi but Gwen spoiled it.
My daughter, who is 10, and who mostly knows about Torchwood through her older Brother, said she wanted RTD to appear as a guest star and he and Gwen get killed together. She admitted she rather liked the idea of them being eaten by some type of large Dinosaur that had got through the Rift. I must admit that does appeal to me too.

I had an idea that Jack gets to do the day over -llke in Groundhog Day, until he fixes the stupid things he did that led to the 456 in the first place (or at the very least makes him think ahead to anti-toxins and hazmat suits).
I also like a "turn left" scenario where Gwen doesn't join and Suzie is not the serial killer, and awesome Kathy Swanson has to help Torchwood in discovering who it really is (cause it's an alien) and she joins Torchwood and is a REAL police liason!
