Ok, after re-reading past articles on season 3, something struck me.

Am i the only one who gets the feeling that John wasn't happy with what happened and how things were going and he doesn't want to continue on with Torchwood? He seemed very sure that this was the end of Torchwood whilst the others where saying it was open ended. In fact, most of the time in these articles, he doesn't seemed to be happy with season 3 at all.

Also, i do get the feeling that he and RTD have had a falling out, although i might be reading into that.

What do you think?

All i know is nothing that was ever said about this mini season of TW matched what we saw in terms of Janto and also in terms of the team sacrificing ..

Jack and Ianto each lose
Gwen appears to come out with everything intact.

Right now, Im extremely curious to know how from moments of press till now, what changed.

I think you are spot on. Looking back at the articles after seeing Day Four, he really does seem unhappy with RTD, the BBC & the direction of the series.

Personally, I think he was happy showing a functioning normal gay male relationship that wasn't all about "THE GHEY", it was just a part of the show - like GDL & JB spoke to during the interviews.

Also, now I understand why GDL was in LA for pilot season, and is coming back.

RTD has always been known in the industry as something of a self-loathing gay man. It's one of the reasons he's never been able to break into the U.S. television industry himself, even after several attempts.

I would imagine that would not sit well with someone as openly comfortable as JB.

GDL was here for more than just the pilot season.

Oh, God, yes. Thank you.

Interesting....Makes a bunch more sense now.

Let's see, one of his co-workers has lost his job and the show is quite likely to lose a lot of fans as a result.
Yes, I can see quite easily how John would be unimpressed.

I know he's toeing the corporation line in interviews and putting a positive spin on things, but seriously, he cannot be so oblivious to the fandom reaction to Janto to think this is going to be good for the show.

I'll reserve judgement until 10pm tonight.
(I had a dream that I was wandering round the BBC website (literally in the website, and bumped into GDL, who gave me a hug and told me not to worry, after he saw how upset I was)
But this is Sci fi and I need a straw to cling to.

Yep definatly could imagine it Jackless if Ianto is not written back in, and it supports an interview i watched on Monday,

The presenters said;
"Now RTD is not writing for Doctor who do you want him to keep writing for Torchwood?"
Gwen/Eve; "yes I would love him to continue"
Gareth/Ianto;....................................

That just says it all!! If the show does become Iantoless I can imagine Torchwood are gonna lose a few million viewers.

Do you know of anywhere to get a copy of that interview - transcript or recording? You can PM me the answer.

If the show continues with Gwen and (possibly) a bit of Jack, I won't be watching. Don't even know yet if I'll bother watching the last part.
Actually, I just decided Children of Earth is NOT CANNON! Possibly it's an alternate universe, but it's certainly not the one I'd been watching!
When you think of how we've waited for so many months for season 3 and what we get is a kick in the teeth for being loyal fans. I'm disgusted with RTD as he clearly couldn't care less about the fans of the show. Does he honestly think we'll still want to watch after this?
It's so unfair to 'Reward' our loyalty this way. Rant over (for now).

That's so true. Because Janto is such a big part of the fandom and there are so many people that love it. And we've been building up for them to have a *real* relationship without commitment issues and being a part time shag. And we only get that when he dies. It's like they know what we want and taunt as with it and then take it away.

Because everyone said that we'd love the Janto in this episode.

Anybody see the synopsis for CoE5, "Gwen stands alone as the final sanction begins....." So this is Gwen's episode unlike the other episodes, ohhhh wait hang on, the other episodes were her episodes as well!! Where the hell is Jack! so in conclusion Season 3 of TW is Gwen's series, unlike the other seasons ohhh wait hang-on again the other seasons were primely about her with a few episodes thrown in about the others....... ohhhh RTD is in-love with Eve's character Gwen........ Now that makes sense.......... NOT!

*rant over*

IKR, I'm bloody sick of this, RTD clearly loves Gwen too bloody much.

Rhys dies in series 1, but no, Gwen gets to have him back when he comes back to life, and then go on to have a happy marriage with him, with a kid on the way. I can totally understand if JD was angry if Ianto really is properly dead.

How is it Gwen gets to have a nice happy relationship, whereas Ianto and Jack don't? It's like that typical cliche of TV and movies where a same-sex couple can't ever have a happy relationship, one of them either has to die prematurely, or go insane. >:(

From: [identity profile] suellen128.livejournal.com

I know its true same-sex relationships are doomed to fail in TV, even in this day and age where same-sex couples can get married, everybody is leery about seeing it before 9pm watershed moment! even if you have man-women couples kissing and making out before 9pm!!

Of course Mary-sue.... I mean Gwen gets the perfect life even if she cheats and then retcon's Rhys thats okay to still have a marriage + baby as shes the 'Heart' of Torchwood and deserves to have an happy existence.

I was sort of hoping that the spoiler was rubbish. However, it evidently was true in every respect. I just wish that JB hadn't said several times that Jack/Ianto fans would be happy with this mini Season. I guess he was told by the powers that be not to say anything under any circumstances. Also lately he has started criticizing the BBC, as you point out. Also Gareth was talking about being in Season 4 a lot. This all led some folk into a false sense of security.

Another thing that irritates me is that some folk who have posted on various forums that they were upset have been criticized by others in quite a rude manner.

When I watch a TV program I can't get involved in what happens unless I have interest in the Characters. This is obviously true of a lot of people. Thus, when they suffer or die, I get upset or mad. I know it is fiction, as do everyone else, but without any involvement in the characters drama is dead for me.

I could never get involved in Gwen from the start, and just as she has never really suffered throughout the other Seasons, it is true here too.
I feel this makes RTD a less than satisfactory writer. His total obsession with Gwen has ruined the program for me and I only continued to watch because I thought having a Gay central relationship in this manner would help break down various barriers and prejudices. {And for JB of course but he was really sidelined in Ep 2 of this so I gave up then}.

Anyhow, RTD is evidently not interested in helping Gay causes or anything like that. He is only interested in himself, and he is making a fortune so why should he worry. He has said more than once that he doesn't care at all or take any notice of what fans want or say. He said he put in the bit about Jack being the face of Boe to upset fans, not for any logical or plot reason.
He probably killed Ianto for the same reason, as the character has grown in popularity and was threatening his Gwen obsession.

Having 4 kids and being pregnant with 3 more I also found the kids involvement in this very upsetting. I would literally kill anyone who threatened any of mine in any way, pacifist or not. If this really happened I think all the Mother's I know would be outside Number 10 with Banners and shouting "what are you going to do about this?" It is obvious that RTD and the other writers know nothing about being a Modern Parent.

I hope the BBC don't make a 4th Season. That may sound a bit selfish but the new fans this has gotten I do not think would care for The Gwen Cooper Adventures. I think the BBC should say Torchwood RIP.

From: [identity profile] suellen128.livejournal.com

I'm the same really, I can watch TV programmes be interested in them but not feeling too sad that a character has died, but I felt different with TW I actually empathized with Ianto a bit, and then to kill *still hoping not* him it seemed to be at random, I know that because Torchwood has gone overseas in a big way, BBC America did not want a gay relationship because it was seemed to be against the normal *women-men couples* And RTD couldn't exactly have them kill the relationship and Jack starting to date women, so they did this as the next kindest thing, There were a lot more worse ways to die i,e Tosh, Owen even Suzie.

I agree even tho I don't have any kids myself, but I have a lot of nephews and nieces which are on the low-level league tables, and this storyline is very angsty, my own Mother has refused to watch it because of the story says it feels too much like past history of the world and there doesn't seem to be many activists protesting about the blackout of information.

I would be sad but I wouldn't be sorry to say goodbye TW now

I think there are three posts over at After Elton that may answer this question.

http://www.afterelton.com/blog/momohassan/torchwood-children-earth-episode-five

One is by Psionycx. Another by arjumand. And the last one by
Darrien.

There is one comment made that RTD didn't like Jack and couldn't see what the fan's saw in him. Maybe he was jealous of the way Moffat wrote him in DW series one. I really don't know.

I also think that JB sensed it too. Maybe when he saw the script's he knew that fan's would't accept what was written and he said something to RTD about it. But as we all know, RTD doesn't care about what we feel, his writing stands.

All I know is that I'm a brassed off Yank who's seen this via other way's. Who'll not have it on her telly on the 20th.
Nor will there bee ANY merchandise from tis series.

I'm also think of not buying any merchandise from even tne Doctor Who branch.

I know I come to this late, but a friend & I discussing it at the time found it telling that JB was missing in action for CoE promotion and that GDL basically said as little as poss, after all the contracts will have gags in them. Just a thought
